I couldn't think of anything other than "strange files"... because this is just simply too weird.

I'm having a great deal of difficulty trying to mix some tracks I recently recorded. I use a Presonus Firepod connected to my Windows XP PC. I use Adobe Audition to track and edit.

So... I have these tracks. And there is something very messed up about them. They are extremely quiet. When I try to pan them left or right, they do neither. They stay in center channel... and get this... they GET LOUDER if you pan them in either direction. WHAT THE HECK?!

So I thought it was my sound driver... nope... whether playing through my PC soundcard, or through the firepod, same thing. I thought it might be the software... wrong again. I tried editing the tracks in Audacity just to see if it was an issue with Audition... same exact thing! I even tried multiple headphones and output jacks just to be sure. This literally just started happening today... I have no idea what caused it. Any ideas? There must be someone here who could lead me to what this is... I need it fixed ASAP!

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated...

thanks.

I'm thinking phase issues...are the tracks of the same thing, but recorded differently?

If not, something has gone horribly wrong and someone else needs to help you.

What format are they?

You say that they are quite when you first listen to them then when you pan them left or right they become louder. To me that sounds as if the were originally panned hard left or right to begin with and by paning them again you are somehow amplifying them.

Are these stereo or mono tracks? One thing i'm thinking is that these were originally stereo tracks and somehow they have been split into two mono tracks but don't quote me on this.

Can you upload a sample of one of thes files for someone to check them out? This would help a great deal.

Could these be mono signals recorded as stereo but with the L and R tracks in antiphase? Try using Audition to do a polarity inversion of either the L or R track (not both) and see what happens then when you pan.
