Hello Everybody:

The final inserts on my master fader are 2 Avalon 737 mic pre-amps (for their opto-compressors) followed by a Waves L-2.

I've been noticing a delay in the L-2's reaction in the beginning of most tunes. The first few notes are louder then it clamps down.

I've been compensating with fades &/or trim automation to help subdue the first few harsh notes. This seems to work pretty well. I've noticed that the problem isn't so bad if I write music with a few pick-up notes to ease into the piece.

I'm assuming this is a common problem that many of you have experienced.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

ENW

The first thing that comes to mind is what is your attack time set at?

Thanks Tom,

Sorry to take so long to reply. I ordered a new Manley Vari Mu. I began to make space for it in my rack. Before I knew it I had the entire thing torn apart & the room was full of cables. I couldn't get a session to open with the Digidesign hardware removed. I've almost got it all back together now.

That's a good question about the attack time on the L-2. I looked at it & re-read the manual. The L-2 has no attack time adjustment. I guess it is an automated process. The controls are...

THRESHOLD
OUT CEILING
RELEASE (auto or manual).

I'm beginning to wonder if I might be getting some sort of initial processing delay from possibly overtaxing my system.

Once the tune is playing, I notice no delay. I can live with it by compensating with fades & trim automation on the first few notes. I was just curious why this delay would occur.

Thanks again,

ENW

P.S.
I went to your site. It looks great. You should consider adding some music for visitors listen to.

Thanks for the suggestion. We are working on it.

It is possible that if the attack time is automatic that something in the time constant circuit or look ahead circuit has gone bad and it is taking some time for the unit to recognize that there is a signal present and to act on it. Have you called WAVES and described the problem and asked them for ideas? Waves tech support can be really good if you get the right tech. I had one of these units for a couple of weeks from our local tech rep company but the unit I had was faulty and was very distorted. It turned out to be a power supply problem but they never got the unit back to me after it was fixed and I have a policy of never buying a piece of equipment without trying it first and I have found some other plugins that I like more including the new XENON from PSP = http://www.pspaudioware.com/

Best of luck! and please let me know what you find out. Congrats on the purchase of the Manley, you will NOT be disappointed,
