Hi,
Here is my first drum + percussion recording (second time for percussion).
A friend of mine played all the drum and percussion parts. He´s not a real drummer
He is more into percussion.
Please critique the recording and the mix only
It was not meant to be a song, just a practice for tracking a drumset, congas and batas.
I just overdubbed the recording with some guitar and bass and a free vsti (mr-tramp).

Thanks

hi,
not bad for a first attempt.
Kit sounds a little dull, or a little too back in he mix, and the congas and kit are sort of getting in each others way. that could possible be arrangement as well as the recording/ mixing though.
where are you micing the congas? they sound a bit slappy without much body, or tone? try different mic positions for different tones, micing from the bottom will get alot more of the bass and tone.
try letting the kit sit a bit more forward in the mix, and use some EQ to distinguish between the kit sounds and the other percussion, like in sympathy for the devil intro or something.
hope this helps

Thanks for the advice.
That´s what I was thinking about the drumset,too, but I wasn´t sure.
The drumkit itself sucked anyway...but it should be more upfront, you are right !
I like the slappy conga sound I raised the 4000-6000 Hz range a bit to get more slap !!!
Maybe a bit more bass wouldn´t hurt (lowering the highs a bit) !
I put an 57 on the edge of the rim, pointing towards the middle of the each peace of the congaset.
It was a bad place for tracking I had to sit in the hallway
(1.5 by 4 meters) of the musicschool , because the other room was occupied I really couldn´t put my monitors anywhere . So they both stood about 10cm apart of each other .... very bad ((
Thanks
