Howdy.

In the next year I will be investing in a new front end for my daw, and I need some advice.

I'm looking for a combination 8 channel mic pre, 8 channel ADC, a PCI interface, and cables able to handle distance with as little loss as possible.

My biggest concern/problem is that I have to record 75 feet away from the source.

I've been looking at the Grace m802, Crookwood iPre, Crane Song Spider, etc..., and I'm interested in RME as I hear they are most compatible with my daw - (Samplitude). So many choices!

Any help, advice, friendly words, etc. would be very much appreciated.

just use 75 feet mic cables

if RME have a PCI option then go for it

if you are looking at Grace and those other mic-pres .... why would you want a " combination 8 channel mic pre, 8 channel ADC " ?

Get an 8-channel digitizing mic pre-amp and interface card of your choice. Site it next to the computer.

Then buy a 30-metre balanced snake (also called loom or multicore) to route the microphone signals from your recording area. You need one with at least 8 "sends". I would get one with 16 "sends" and 4 "returns" for when you want to expand your operations to a greater number of channels and/or want to send monitor outputs back to the performers.

Live sound engineers use these snakes all the time on location. Studio engineers use them by default when they are built into the structure of the studio.

if I had Grace mic-pres next to me I'd be using Canare Star Quad

agreed ... if there was a requirement for 16+ then I have a loom as well

for the higher quality recording I have my returns to the stage as a seperate loom

lpe didn't mention there was a requirement for stage returns

Seeing the equipment list, I did assume (and you should never assume) that this was a classical sort of this that didn't need Fold Back and so even 8 individual Star Quads would not be over the top
...
a single star quad can be used as a return if required

having said all that
I should point out that Star Quad does come in looms or multi cores
... as much as 24 I think

if you are really keen
a few 8 way multi's could be useful (or conbinations of 4 way to 12 way)
you can lay them to different parts of the room ... church ... theatre and use one as a return if needed

it all depends on the requirements and the way you want to work
