This is my buddies project: Hexton

I used a Projectmix I/O to bring everything in with the aid of protools
I had a:
Beyer M160 on the neck of the acous
Beyer M201 on the sound hole (also on his voice)
SM57 picking up room noise
and ran a DI straight from the acous

He has a Martin DCX1E

This is my first attempt as doing anything acoustic
so I got some things wrong

This song opens up with a few bars of mainly just the room mic
then the rest filter in for the song

I have the m201 panned 75L, the m160 panned 75R and the rest down the middle

Any type of critique or complaint etc is very much welcomed

Thanks in advance,
Joey W

What do you think you got wrong?

Did you EQ the guitar at all? I would work on the mic placement a bit...it sounds very thin and boxy. I find a good place for the mic, at least on my guitar, is right in between the sound hole and where the neck starts. Sometimes I put the mic right beside my head (so it's next to my ears). Experiment. If you get the placement right, you shouldn't have to mess with it too much in the mix.

I don't really like the sound at the beginning with just the room mic. I'd rather the first impression wasn't so distant.

The vocals (not the singer) sound okay, but could maybe use a touch of reverb or something to blend it in better. It's lacking presence as well. Also, the vocalist is out of tune more often than not.

Reminds me of early Dashboard. Except not quite.

I apologize if I'm being harsh. You're recording and that's the important thing. Just keep at it. Listen closely and experiment. Cheers!

I would suggest a slow gradual fade in of the close guitar, bringing it up out of the 'verby' initial phase.

mhutch:
I completely get what you say about mic placement...it's just i won't be able to re-record these songs which is problematic

And i'll look into adding some reverb

And no worries, you weren't being harsh at all

codemonkey:
That could work i'll play around with that

Thanks for your help guys, anything else would be great too Smile
