gimmie gear

PostPosted: Mon May 12, 2008 11:50 am Reply with quoteBack to top

I recently did a demo for a Celtic/Classical style trio in my project studio I built in August.

Instruments are Harp, Flute and Fiddle

Tracked and mixed on a Korg D3200
Mastered with Cooledit and Soundforge

The band was very happy with the results of the demo, but as you all know us engineers are always looking to up our game.

Any critiques, or help would be greatly appreciated, as I am doing a few bands for free until I get my technique down and lean my gear before I start charging.

Thanks in advace!

I'd say the lack of replies is a good sign that all is well with this mix! (or that it really sucks and the pros just don't want to hurt my feelings!)

Dude. Don't worry. It sounds great. It would be pretentious of me to assume any sort of criticism, therefore I shall keep my yap shut. Loved it.

The high end is slightly on the harsh sounding side ... most likely because the arrangement (the instrument ranges) are all in the upper registers.

There's a LOT of energy present in the high mids.

Some elements are more offending than others -- for instance, the string catches more bite than the harp ... and the flute falls somewhere in between ... mostly okay, but catching some grain/bite when pushing the notes hard.

This could be approached/tamed by wholesale rolling down the upper mid range on the individual tracks, but what I'd attempt is to try to dial in a multi-band compressor on the individual tracks and have it kick in when the energy in that freq range overwhelms ... because the bite isn't there all the time ... it's there in the swells -- when the instrumentalist pushes volume during emphasis.

All in all, this is excellent ... great content and performance and balance to the mix, but the aforementioned was something I noticed ... and yes, it's picky.

Very Happy

Kev-

Thanks for all the replies!

k-dub after listening back you are right on it being heavy in the high/high-mid range.

That's a great Idea ... I have several good muti-band compressors and I'll try 'em out, see if I can tame some of the swells etc.

Also I may have to remaster and be a bit more proactive riding the faders to tame some of it as well.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Is there any way to flag posts to moderators? Short of pm'ing them with a link?

I'm not familiar with the genre in a mixing sense but I really enjoyed the song. Smile Very relaxing.

Sounds good to me.
On the business side, I think you could start charging right away, your quality justifies it.
If you are worried about learning your gear before you charge you could always stop the clock when you have to break out a manual or figure something out. As long as your honest up front, the bands probably won't mind.
I started charging on day 1 because I knew I needed to raise money for more gear ( sure it was only $10 hr. Sad but you gotta start somewhere)
