Hello All,

I want to do a local live recording of a group that will be performing outside next month. One of my apprehensions are the PC DAW that I want to use. Mainly cooling.

Does anyone have any recommendations for doing this type of recording without the PC shutting down because it gets too hot?

The case itself has about 10 fans total (on the case and within the case) and my plan was to keep it in the shade, out of any direct heat source with all the other audio gear. Will I be OK or do you think I should get some additional cooling methods for it and if so, what?

yeah having something like big tent with no sides will be a big help. only using it when needed as well..
see if you can do a test run as well a few days before to see how it works.

you'll be fine, just keep it out of direct sunlight.

I have done remote recording with my DAW in very hot temps with no problem.
I think the reason is that RECORDING takes much less power than MIXING. When I attempted playback in the heat and started opening a bunch of plug-ins is when I ran into trouble. This has happened to me many times, so if you have to play back, just avoid using power hungry plugins.

Look into the type of cooling systems that gamers use. Expensive, yeah, esp if you've already had 10 fans fitted, but effective (so far I know). Just dont burst the water cooled systems...

Thanks for all the great info.

I thought about doing water cooling, but you just run into problems with transport. It is nice for stationary systems, but not when you need to move them.

As far as playback, there wont be any. I am just going to record the show off the mixer.

Ideally I would like to record each channel, however I just don't have enough $$$ yet to be able to do that.

Oh well.

All I can say is, get used to it.
Murphy's law of sound #6: You will always be one input short. Or one monitor bus, or one channel strip, or...

One amplifier output short.

Btw, thanks for the note on water cooling. I didn't even consider for a second about it being unportable :S I'll definitely stick with fans now.
