I ususally post mixes for critique, but lately I have been doing a project with a great singer/songwriter (IMO).
We just got done cutting some scratch guitar and vocal to send out to the other musicians that are in on the project to give them the basic song ideas.
He's not a guitarist, he just uses one to bang out chords to write his songs, and this is just a slapped down scratch track while we were half drunk, so I'm not lookin for a critique of the musicianship or mix, but rather the actual song/songwriting.
Thanks in advance!

Good start. The singer has something in mind that is bringing him down, if I were this person, I would elaborate on that. The open mic hook has a lot of potential as a mask for many of the human wants. Maybe a prechorus to better define the situation the songwriter is dancing verbally around but never addressing completely. When a rewrite is done simply focusing on "open mic" as a door to a desirable something and then finding the opposite of that desirable something can lead to a new approach.
Songs are never fully finished as you may already know. We try to dress them up the best we can and send them out for acceptance. |

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Since he wants me to "produce" and play on the project, that is the invaluable type of input I need. Thanks very much.
The other musicians (most of whom have played together in the same bands for years) will also be a part of the creative process with the songwriting as well.
He wants me to help him with input on that type of stuff as the scratch tracks we laid were just ideas and nowhere near completed songs.
Ya may get a good chuckle outa this idea where he just has a bit of a melody line for the verse and "scats" it as he only has a chorus written for it so far
