How to search out the information you want on Recording.org

I agree Turner. The search function is anemic. It is a poor representation of what an actual search routine should be. Boolean my butt...who cares about AND OR NOT .

Select a forum, search for any terms or all terms, should it be a topic or post, was it a full moon or Easter...it's just insane really.

We spend time weeding out spam but no thought goes into an often referred to barely useable, should be simple, day-to-day task like searching.

It's the freaking Internet!!! It was BUILT on porn and search engines!

Can I get one?

The next time some freak suggests I or anyone else do a search for it...can you show me a real honest to goodness search function that will actually locate the information I am in want of here @ RO?

Or is that asking too much?

You are absolutely correct.
RO's Search tool only searched for the term "Full" and only gave back results based on that word, even though I typed "Full Range".

Neither selection seems to matter (search for any / search for all).

I tried ye old faithful "Full+Range", complete with Quotes, and it still ignored the second search term...

That's an issue that we need to discuss.

It must just be the four of us that are having issues with it Smile

I search for a specific item and sometimes it can take a while sifting...and I do not have "a while" encoded in my "patience is a virtue" algorithm.

The bigger thing is, this is the same thing you get on any forum. It's a hindrance everywhere, but has been accepted as a way of doing things.

I know, speed kills! But damn man, what about those younger cats that cannot even say "anding or boolean"?

I have issues to. There should be an entry to search the topics only. This would help. Also quotes and normal search shortcuts don't seem to help me. I have all but given up using the search here. I search using google then reference back to recording.org, seems to help.

The search on phpBB in general sucks imo.

Sometimes the best plan is to go to clusty.com (example, might work different elsewhere) and type:
host:www.recording.org full range monitor

The best thing I've found is not checking "use query as entered" but using "search for all terms".
Sometimes helps.

Using google, click under Advanced Search just to the right of the search entry bar. Then under domain enter recording.org Or you can enter something like this:

Code:

"tube" site:recording.org

in the search bar.

choosing search topic or title makes a big difference. I found this by typing in, anemic ... and it worked perfect for me.

It's been a while since I looked for search improvements. There may be some updates somewhere that can improve things here... I'll look around for them.

For clarity...I have pointed many to use the search "engine" here as well. So let the word "freak" trouble you not Smile

I know these search routines worked with a new start up and a couple hundred pages.

Google/AOL/Yahoo/Hotbot/Altavista collectively show 569,068 under the search engine saturation profile from Marketleap.com

I have had better luck browsing for things on the forum rather then search for them. Yes it is that bad

Spent a few minutes to cut up some markup from google to make a down and dirty search box.

It has no options and no clutter but uses the reknowned Google search engine to get your stuff.

Also cut one out for Clusty.com and Metacrawler.com. But now I want to have a drop box that allows the search input to be routed to either of these three places.

So that may take a few minutes more...plus I quit smoking...I may not do it at all if the pressure is too much.

It's too much!

I said Clusty, I used it a lot a while ago, started going with Yahoo now.

It clusters stuff, sort of like grouping them by header, means you can explore a smaller aspect of a broader term. It also seems to cross reference results from (an out of date index) Msn, Yahoo and a few more.

Sure, but I liked that about Clusty.com(the clustering) and was not familiar with this search engine. It still turns up information rather easily and there is one thing that I am and it is easy Wink
