How much sand to use for floating floor?

Everyone please take note,

I deleted a couple of posts here (3 in total) that had nothing to do with the thread - but took off on a personal note.

This is fairly unusual - so I am not going to make a big deal over it - but be it understood that we don't tolerate any sort of abusive behavior here - not even if we got up on the wrong side of the bed.

What yuo do underneath in the lower level room is going to be the biggest help for you.

This is also another option - but I am not certain if the materials or experienced labour are available in China - and that is an assembly using a special rubber mat along with lightweight gypsum concrete (which is installed between 3/4" to 1" in thickness and only adds roughly 7 psf of load to your floor).

Did you mean that if people below me don't make a rukus, or you meant adding construction to the ceiling of the lower floor?

That other option sounds enticing actually. Would it give significantly better performance, and does cost a lot more? If it's a much better option on both accounts, I'll ask around about it (but I'd need more detail from you about what it involves first).

Is the studio going to be on the second floor of your apartment? If so, added impact isolation is of minimal value.

Sound isolation is limited by the weakest link. What are your plans for the ceiling? What about your windows? They are part of the wall and will transmit low frequency waves in the wall.

What is interior height? I could not figure that out from your images.

Hehe, we could really use some shaving off of the construction cost. I was joking about the blood money, but we did take out a loan to do this, so we have to be careful about overspending.

Yes, the studio will be on the 2nd floor (our apartment is on the 7th and 8th floor, and there are units above us too, and across the hall from us, but not directly next to us). I'm mostly concerned about structural noise like people banging and stomping on stuff. Also I know for a fact that there will be other units in the building doing construction for the next few years (move in rate is slow, but they trickle in one after another). If I don't try to do some kind of impact noise isolation, my recordings will end up with a lot of unintended industrial sound effects... Shocked

But since I'm about as lost as a lamb here, I could use any advice you guys have.

For the ceiling, I'd like to do a decoupled one hanging off anti-vibration springs, with a couple layers of gypsum and with glassfiber insulation in the space between the existing ceiling and the gypsums.

The wall will be a 2-leaf design, with the existing concrete wall being one, and the second one being wooden studs/4" 703/4 layers of 0.9cm gypsum, and neoprene pads underneath the plate.

I've already sealed the window with brick/cement. Who needs sunshine and a view when you have music? Very Happy

The balcony glass door has half of it sealed off too, and the remain half will have two additional sound isolation doors installed (not glass, but wood), so it shouldn't be a weak link (I hope).

Ceiling height is 9'3 ft. I was going to try to make the ceiling flush by dropping it below the support soffit beams, but I'd lose way too much height--even taking a bass guitar off of me will whack the neck against the ceiling. So I decided to just follow the general shape of all the soffits, but totally covering them all.

I'm working on a bunch of diagrams and drawings right now that'll explain my game plan. I'll post them as soon as they're done (hopefully tomorrow), and I'd love to get some feedback on them.

The drawings will help a lot. With flanking sound, what is the planned isolation between the studio and the rest of your home? sound getting into the studio from the living area amy be the limiting factor.

I really didn't mean to imply that that what you had done was truly wrong. That's why I said it was just advice... not a condemnation.

Hell... I think most anyone who's seriously contemplating a studio build does the same thing... (I should know... I did the same thing!!!) and you'll see a lot of guys who do it.

What I was alluding too is that if you can settle in on one forum, it's more likely to get a consistent dialog. Nothing else...

Again, I apologize... Didn't even intend to be anywhere close to stirrin' sumpin' up.
