Hi. Me and my mate are (trying) to set up a kind of a local audio company done around our schoolwork. He has what I think is probably not the best place for recording but it is spaced out correctly to make a nice neat one.

It is above a garage and is a smallish room.

We would like some tips for a nice sounding low budget recording/audio studio.

p.s. We are getting some nice equipment as well. We like the Tascams, Zooms and DAWs, any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Sparks. Wink

There's a ton of advice if you read through the various posts in this forum. There's also my Acoustics FAQ that puts most of what you need all in one place:

You can use moving blankets. Layer them or build a frame using PVC pipe. Suspend the blankets from the PVC pipe.

Where do you buy moving blankets?
What do you attach the PVC pipe to?
I am curious.

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to make a small room sound better, is to put in book cases along the side and rear walls.

It's easy to find free books these days...you shouldn't have any trouble filling up the shelves. The books provide diffusion and bass absorption. Not a replacement for bass traps, but a VERY cheap and VERY easy way to almost ALWAYS improve the way the typical small room reacts as a mixing environment.

I disagree with the moving blanket idea...the REAL problem in a small room is low end. Blankets will damp the high end, but not do a thing for your low end troubles. The vast majority of your problems in a small room (given reasonably adequate equipment) will be getting the low end right.
