so, i've been learning as much as i can about recording over the past year (taking classes at the local college, subscribing to various magazines, and reading my butt off.) but im having a big conflict with myspace and their music player. does anybody know any possible solutions to help the mix for this other than using a different player. it seems like decreasing presence frequencies might help...

my mixes sound so much better pre-myspace =[

thank you so much for your help in advance!

its not really the player more so the compression, are you uploading an mp3? trying uploading the raw uncompressed wav and see if it improves quality. Not much you can do about myspace but their are a few tricks like for youtube which if you googled im sure you could find.

I've seen myspace pages with soundclick embedded players in them. I don't know how they did this but I think that would be the way to go.

Thats unlikely to work for a full song as myspace has a size limit for uploads. However, encoding your original MP3 file at the highest bit-rate possible while still keeping below the size limit (10 MB I think?) should help a bit. Ignore their recomendation to use 128kbps unless your song is so long that anything higher would be too large.

Another option: upload a sine-wave sweep, then download their re-encoded version and deconvolve it with the original. This should give you a 'myspace' impulse which you could load into a convolution plug such as SIR; you could then experiment with different EQ settings at the mastering stage while listening to the results through the myspace impulse. I haven't tried that myself however, so I don't know how well it would work..

that's a great idea IIRs. yeah i got the original song down to about 8.8 MBs before i put it up... i don't completely understand the process you suggested but ill give it a try. do you think i could run a freq/stereo/rms-p2p analyzer and see the changes visually? i don't know how noticeable it would be visually, but i'll try that really quick.

thanks again.

If you're on a PC you can use the Voxengo Deconvolver app to generate a test tone to upload and then to deconvolve the myspaced version:

(follow the instructions in the help file)

Its not actually my idea I'm afraid: I've come across a myspace impulse elsewhere, but I can't remember where and a quick google didn't find anything.

hrmm, think i'm getting it... although i've been converting it to mp3 for myspace... the closest thing the program supports is .wav. should i convert it back for the process?

and just got a message saying unregistered versions can only process single files only. hrmm... im going to have to tweak with this for a while. im completely new to convolution reverb. amazing concept.

You only need to process a single file, so the unregistered version should be fine.

It probably would be best to convert the test file to an mp3 before uploading, as that is what you will have to do with your finished mix (use the same bit-rate for both). Then convert the downloaded file back to a wav to deconvolve it.

okay, hate to sound like a noob, but i am one so here goes...

i uploaded the test tone (3sec one generated by the program) and then processed the myspace.wav file with it. the program wont support the upload of mp3 file in that it is not the registered version, so i converted to a .wav. in the end i got a swishy laser soft version of the original. then i did the same with the original version (same bit-rate for both) got a similar sound for that one as well. i have no idea what to do next.

Why not pay for your own website where you can post .wav files, and link from the MySpace page?

Or just use Soundclick. there you can upload 320k files. I know it's not as popular, but if more people stop using MySpace and find ways to lead people to SC, then it will become popular.

If you followed the instructions correctly and deconvolved the myspaced version of the file against the original test tone, you should have ended up with a wav file that sounds like a short 'click'..? This file is the 'Impluse Response' or 'IR' file.

If so you now need a plug-in that can load that IR file and process other audio through it. I use SIR cos its free:

so, do i not use the test tone generator at the bottom? instead i use the original version there?

when i do this i get the short "click" sound you are talking about. almost like a quick hi hat foot pedal sound.

the vst plugin you gave me also isn't showing up in my daw. i've had this problem before... gah!
