Hi,

I'm looking to get a new mic to add to my collection. I would something that would be a nice compliment to what I already own. It will be used to record vocals!

Pleases recommend one from the poll I've posted.

For the budget tube mics the list is :-

T.Bone SCT-700
MXL 9000
ADK GT-2
Nady TCM 1150
Apex 460
T.Bone Retro III
Cascade Elroy
Karma K-58
Superlux CMH-8D

If there is anything better under £150 could you suggest it below.

Thanks

Maybe a good dynamic mic?.... Like a Shure sm58 (on the cheaper end) or possibly a shure sm7b or electrovoice re-20 (on the higher end)? I have a good old sm58 and have recently fallen back in love with it. I used to think that it was over rated until I realized that I wasn't using it right (I wasn't turning it up enough so I would always have get too close thus giving me a muddy, bass heavy sound... proximity effect). Since I have been cranking the gain and staying off the mic, I think I might prefer it to my nt1-a...

I plan on trying out the sm7b or ev re-20 in the near future.

Looks like you've got only low-cost LDC's.

LDCs are what you'll likely use for vocals. A dynamic'll do, of course, but they don't have the frequency response that a good LDC does.

Why do you need more mics?

Whose vocals are you recording? What kind of tone are you looking for? Etc.

SM58. No mic collection is complete without at least two of them.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I decided to get a dynamic mic as I don't already have one in my collection!

I ended up getting a Heil dynamic mic after hearing SO much good stuff about these mics!

I decided on the PR-35 after being recommended this by Bob Heil as being the best option!

Can't wait to try it out this week along with my MXL v67g!

Hi,

I tried the AT4040, Blue Bluebird, Shure SM7b and Heil PR-35 on the vocalist I'm working with.

http://www.richnley.co.uk/audio_clips.html

Here's what I found :-

Heil PR-35 just didn't suit at all

Blue Bluebird sounded too thin

AT4040 sounded pretty good but still a fraction harsh in the top end

Shure SM7 sounded pretty good but a fraction dull

I'm looking for something in between the SM7 and AT4040.

Would either the Oktava MK319, KEL HM-2d or CAD M177 be a good choice?

Hello dickyfunk,
Yes, I own two MK319's and they are the best sound you can get for the money! I had a studio buddy of mine call me up years ago when they were on special for $99 a pair! My personal favorite is the Neumann TLM 103 with the shockmount. It's the next best thing to the Mk319 in my opinion. However you have to spend $1250 USD not within your $150 pounds.
Best of luck
