This is the first track I recorded and mixed myself. Please be as critical as possible, I only want to produce the best product. A link to the song can be found here:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6962602

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks.

I like the tone of the bass and the drums are weak. The main voice is off note on far too many occasions. It's an odd piece.

Thank you for your comments.

Here is a version with beefed up drums a bit, and I used a bit of autotune.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=878485&songID=6970497

I didn't want to because it seems like cheating, but alas my voice needs some work.

What do you think makes it an odd piece?

I guess in that it reminds me of musical things from longer ago then it actual is. It has some current feel, more then it requires really, so the mix of the two is odd.

Not undone for sure, it is a common thread that many, including myself, have done or are doing. I suppose the voice/melody makes me think of something that I have long since forgotten?

How did the mix compare to the first one? The other one is still on soundclick.

Much better on the second version. Bass might be a tad loud and whatever is panned in the left the whole time is too loud to me. I like the experimental nature of the music. I hate when people just copy whatever their favorite style/band is. I can really appreciate the creative nature of what your doing. I would try a few more takes of the vocals if its you doing them. You have nothing but time and you probably wouldn't have to put so many effects on them if you were happier with them. Keep it up.

Space, I am kind of confused by your second post, but I kind of see where you are coming from.

Eric, your input has inspired me to rerecord the vocals one day, when I get around to do it. I haven't really noticed a problem with the bass levels, it sounded alright out of different stereos I have tried it on.

I recorded the drums with one kick and one overhead. I just doubled the overhead track, and now the cymbals seem crackily. Is there a better way to 'beef' them up without cheating? I tried to rerecord the drums, but I couldn't get it perfect. I originally did the drums first and based everything off of that. Any other tricks to making it sound bigger with the tracks I have?

The instruments on the left are percussion instruments, such as guiro, djembe, shakers, cowbell I believe. The acoustic guitar is also on the left.

Inspirations for this song probably came from the bands Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, and Pink Floyd. I am also quite fascinated by world music, and I also have a bit of classical training. The lyrical content deals with meeting/finding my wife. I don't think I tried to copy them exactly but just to use my favorite elements of their sound.

I have found that recording can be a very arduous process, but in the end the final product is of higher quality if you keep setting the bar higher.

Here is the next version of the song, with cleaner drums and more space I believe.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to improve this any further.

Thanks!

Where have I heard that intro before?
Something about it, it's going to be in my head for ages now, until I can pick where.

Lol, it's a cool song. Makes me want to thrash out and run with the riffs.

I have no idea how you can make it better. Just wanted to say I enjoyed it.

Rock on.

St. Anger. Razz

Took me a while. Cool intro. Close enough to give me the feel but distant enough to not be ripping it off.

Wow, thanks for the compliments! I played/sang all of the parts except the electric guitar, that was my buddy.

I am not actually a big Metallica fan at all. I had to go listen it to it, but I can definitely see what you are saying. My secret is to find 'catchy' combinations of the pentatonic scale, especially in the bass and vocal lines.
