Anyone using SAWstudio?

I'm doing whatever I can to never support PT again. Why? I hope it never get ripped off like that again.

During my quest for finding the best Windows DAW for 2009! I found this

I've seen it. I've tried it. The demos look impressive. The things that concern me are support and compatibility. If it's an audio only studio, I'm sure it would work well.

Chris, what happened between you & ProTools? Not that I like it or use it much. I don't like the games they play. I don't like crap regarding "proprietary circuitry" in a $250 box. I got tired of waiting for real-time play out's. I guess it's cool if you're doing hip pop & wrap or maybe if you're recording Henry Metal? Bomb factory 1176 sounds a little like the real unit. Compatible between professionals & beginners alike. So what gives?

A year ago I was in the same mood as Chris, but since I got PT 8 I'm a lot more satisfied with the software side of PT. A lot more useful features (at least useful to me); much better look and feel. Since I'm only running a small project studio I have very little interaction with the hardware side. I have an 002R and have not used the pres in a year. And half of the conversion is through my Octopre. I still probably won't go with digi if I make an interface upgrade. But PT8 at least put them back in the ballgame.

I'm "currently" in the same boat as Bob here. I like PT8 a lot better than the predecessors. I've used 6.4 -7.4 and I think as early as 5. Version 8 does have a lot of nice features. Playlist, Plugins, automation and decent midi finally. Unfortunately many, many people are finding that they can't even use ProTools since version 8 came out. A lot of i7 owners are up in arms for all the bugs.

The thing about SAW Studio that really looks good is the editing features. Although I think many DAWs work much the same way, that video demo really makes it look easy to use. What I don't like about it is the price. $300 for a basic version? (wait, that's the same for ProTools LE isn't it?). Only 24 tracks.

I'd take Samplitude over that any day. Sam 10 Download version is $565cdn. 64 tracks. A great plugin bundle. $1620 for Sam Pro. 999 tracks.

SAW just seems a bit over priced to me.

Edit: OKAY. Sorry to rant here but....

If you want midi, you have to buy the add on for SAW studio $300.00.
Reverb $100
Dynamics processing $100
Frequency analyzer $100

I know you don't have to buy the extras but giving those consideration makes SAW very expensive for what it is IMHO.

Remy, I don't want to get into a big PT bash, but I'll answer your question briefly.
I really like the how PT looks and works, still to this day. All other DAW's I've looked at so far are way to busy/cluttered or just ugly, but I know I will get ued to what I start using.
The $25000.00 I spent (or was it more) on PT over the years, I'd been way further ahead if I invested that money in choice gear that counts. I don't believe Pro Tools is the best choice in that respect, especially the big HD systems. No way is the HD system worth what they are asking.

Samplitude definitely sounds nice. 999 tracks, man I rarely need more than 32.

Sawstuido is cool!

The operation is like a real console, no need to jump and out from the menu bar...but not everyone adapts to it nowadays....
Sound quality has been superb to my ear since the first time (5 years ago) I listened to....
The eq comp gate inside the strip of the console has great quality with very little cpu consumption. It supports plugins with it's own format, dx & vst\vsti. Automation of dx and vst is not supported at present.

The concept of SAW is quite seriously integrated for mixing and recording...

I advise you'd better download the demo to see if it fits your need..

Wouldn't want to break tradition now or much worse, make ProTools available to anyone who wanted to use it. You can still buy full versions of LE though for around $300 cdn.

Samplitude's routing reminds me of ProTools which is why I bought it in the first place. VST compatible though and great reverb and basic noise reduction built in. The NR works great btw. For a free plugin anyway.

I find that somewhat disheartening since most plugins come in VST format. That to me is along the same lines as ProTools' proprietary hardware necessitation(lol is that a word?).

I know what you mean Chris. In some respects, we have both been directed into the same dilemmas. I got the choice equipment. Didn't invest in the professional HD ProTools. I don't play computer games and am not anywhere near as proficient with our widely used software as some others are. In fact I prefer to pass myself off as an old-school analog person, which I am. I just can't deal with this constant upgrading thing. It's never-ending whereas my old choice equipment is quite finite, along with the constant maintenance & upkeep, restoration it constantly requires. And then there is the fact that it's easier to move a ProTools rig than it is to move a Neve console to accommodate my HD 24xr. I mean Digi-design stuff definitely has its own sonic signature. I think many folks get incredible sounds utilizing only their stuff. It's not really the stuff that matters but how you like to work. I'm going through huge financial problems here and no longer have a good place to park my truck. This is a huge problem. A 24,000 pound problem. A ProTools rig would sit nicely in the corner of my basement. The Mercedes-Benz 1117 won't. So do I sell everything off & close doors? I really don't want to. But this summer is turning out to be a worse summer than last summer. And here I am trying to reinvent what & how I do things all the while having to throw more money than I don't have, at it. When I was a teenager I had to do duplication. I didn't like that. Now I'm purchasing duplicators. And who is going to do the duplication? I am. It looks like I'm coming full circle.

I'm a PT'er (Alsihad) and have been so for a very long time
will probably continue to be

I have war'd with Digidesign since the beginning
and will probably continue to do so

it will be interesting to see if I ever upgrade my HD system

The other DAW's are now working much better than they did in the early days and there is good choice out there for much cheaper prices

probably because he can't demo it - although I agree with you that Cubase and Nuendo are more than worthy when stacked up against a PTLE system (I own Cubase 5 and have been using Steinberg products since SX1), with a high grade audio interface with excellent pres they stack up against PTHD and offer a larger feature set in some areas (esp. MIDI). Apple's Logic Studio 8 and Samplitude/Sequoia also stack up against PT. If it wasn;t that the industry is scared to throw away their mega investment in pro tools and many, many thousands of dollars put into it over the years, we could all stop this nonsense of the myth of 'protools - industry standard, so we better buy it'. Fair enough, if you like protools then by all means use it, but be open minded enough to at least consider the competition out there, because in the last 3-4 years, going native over DSP is barely a factor any more and the competition has implemented many, many features and GUI improvements which until PT8 left Digi looking decidedly mid 90s behind the times. PT8 still is not the answer for many, who prefer to go native, choose their own audio interfaces and run equally if not more powerful software in Sonar, Logic, Cubase and Samplitude etc.
