I have the following gear which I have set up for "sweetening" video:
-FAST, DV Master, firewire DV editor in a PIII800 w/768 MB RAM and 4 9GB SCSI Barracuda drives.
-Steinberg Nuendo in a dual PIII 1GB w/1GB RAM and 72GB Cheetah drives.
-MOTU MIDI Timepiece A/V
The FAST DV Master hardware seems to offer no way to synchronize to anything, so I am synching my Nuendo rig to it. The only way I have figured out to sync the machines is as follows:
1) I import the video file into an editing software and add a prerecorded SMPTE audio track to the project. I then pan the SMPTE track to the left and all audio tracks to the right. I'll also copy the existing audio tracks out to CDRW and import them into the Nuendo session on the other machine.
2) Now, I will use the new video file with the panned [SMPTE(L)/Audio(R)] audio tracks. The left output of the the video file is patched to the MIDI Timepiece and the right channel to the console for monitoring.
3) The MIDI Timepiece (on the Video editor machine) converts the SMPTE to MTC and sends it to the Nuendo machine via a MIDI cable.
4) Nuendo receives the MTC and syncs nicely to the incoming MTC/SMPTE.
All seems to work nicely, except for the occasional video artifacts which seem to be inherent to MiniDV with the FAST DV Master (tips here welcomed). Figuring it out and actually making it all work took a while, but it seems to work ok now.
Am I doing this the hard way (considering the gear I have), or is this as simple as it can get? I guess I was hoping that I have overlooked something that will make this whole operation a bit simpler. Any suggestions?
Bill Watson
