Hello everyone. I have a job at the New Jersy Performing Arts Center in a few weeks recording Jazz and R&B Acts. The producers want to cut the CD in 5.1 surround. Does anyone out there have experience tracking a session for final distribution in 5.1? Are there micing techniques that should be considered? Is there a primer on the subject? Thank you! Any info can be sent to Roger Stauss at noteworthy@madriver.com
Thank You!

------------------
http://www.vermontrecording.com |

Hi Roger,
<< The producers want to cut the CD in 5.1 surround. >>
In theory you could record a Dolby .ac3 or a DTS datastream to a CD-ROM. However, in essence the audio CD is a stereo only format and does not support 5.1 surround. Currently I believe the only consumer formats which do support 5.1 surround are DVD and the rather more outdated LaserDisk.
If you still want to record in 5.1 let me know and I try to give you some pointers.
Greg
[This message has been edited by Greg Malcangi (edited November 19, 2000).] |

Hi
i don't know if this is any help but i played on a session at Abbey Road last year that was recorded in the new SA-CD format. As i believe it, this is also 5.1 format. The engineer took all of the surround mix from 5 AKG solid Tubes placed in situ in the live room. This was for a live Big Band CD.
As I said it might not help but is another avenue for thought.

------------------
Paul |
