Listen to the audio file attached and see if you guys can figure out how this was done. Is there a way that you can do this manually (although a plug-in would work too) but I would like to know what it's doing to get that effect?
Wave File Clip
MP3 Clip
Thanx in advance,
-tkr

Is it the pan thing you're talking about?
Hard to tell specifically on these cheap laptop speakers, but so far it sounds like a panner to me.

No, it's not just a plain pan....for me it sounds like it goes in a circle (not just back and forth). It starts in the right speaker then it jumps out of the speakers and into your right ear, then it goes through your head and out your left ear (in one ear and out the other), and back into the left speaker then it goes around sorta behind the speakers and then comes back out again.
Beleive me, this IS rocket science. Very Happy
You may need to re-position yourself to the speakers to hear it (or listen on better speakers). If you're listening off center you probably won't get the effect. This is a VERY cool effect when you hear it.
-tkr

In that case, it's a panner with a phase thingy.
Could be a roland rss, or a desper spatializer (RIP).
Mix together some inverted polarity and micro-delays (<1ms) on a couple different aux sends. You can get close to the same type of effect, but having a box that does it is soooo much easier.
Once you've got it down, the hard part is resisting the temptation to overuse it. Too much and it will make the mix too "confusing", and too much inverted signal will cancel out when you bump to mono.

Waves makes a great plugin tool for Pro Tools called "Mondo Mod" for panning effects with phase shifts.

I watched my friend do it by taking say the right channel and making a seperate file, but reversing the phase of it, then making a file of the left and laying in the right (out of phase) cannel into it. By manipulating by means of certain software, the controlled phase relationships he could make sounds seem to come from behind you in the sweet spot. However the mono mix of this type of signal favors center channel info, and is rather dry. That would be the trade off for fussing with the phases. I can find out what he used, it is a mastering pluggin.
