Is anyone on this forum gonna help me with my questions or are you all politely telling me to get lost by not answering?
There's stuff I need to find out [as i posted below]. Is this the place where the knowledge is, or not?

I am sorry Maak, this forum has had less than 300 posts since Oct, 17, 2000. It has nothing to do with you, it is the nature of the Audio for TV and film. If I could dig up the info for you I would, but even moderators are not expected to know everything. When I am searching for answers, I use as many resources as it takes. It is a spectrum of audio that does not seem to attract a lot of attention. Please don't think it is personal..

Hey Maak, sounds like you're in almost the same spot as I am, except you actually have a particular job waiting for you to catch up. Here is a link to Amazon.com (can you order from NZ? I have a copy of this book, and it has been pretty helpful so far.

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0240803833/qid=1015963577/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-0407379-8587 813

(First, if you are on a tight budget, and who isn't, you need to ignore the 12 foot long console which I would be lucky to afford 6 inches of, and skip the history lesson in the first part, getting right to the meat in the following chapters.) The link shows several example pages, which may help you decide if it will help. If you're in a hurry (duh!) possibly overnight FedEx? Anyway, check it out if you like - it was the only one my search returned that was less than $100 or so, except for one on concert sound. That's why I bought it. Some of it gets kind of deep, but then it's not a shallow subject. Best of luck, sounds like a cool project... Steve

Thanks for the reply's
I have found out what DTS means in real terms but although it seems like it has better dynamics i doubt the film will be shown in a DTS equipped theatre.
Are there any major things to look out for when going to DD 5.1?

Seeing I think the ambience of the foley will be important in this film, how do i get realistic surround reverb? i.e. the illusion of positioning of the sound within that space.

I am starting to think i should give up the idea of recording [multi mic] ambience with the foley as too difficult for a first movie sound.
Any Ideas/comments?

MAAK

P.S. Duoh! Ive just sen the UBB code thingys

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm not far enough along on my self-education on surround to know what to tell you. It does sound like a daunting project to start out on. Maybe Greg Malcangi can help you (Pro Tools and Drums moderator) as he does this in his studio - read his bio. Here is another possible help - use this link and click on the forums area. I don't know if you have to be registered to ask questions, but no big deal either way.

http://www.surroundpro.com/

One of the articles on that site is by Tomlinson Holman, the author of the book I recommended. (Forgot to mention the title, BTW - it is "Up and Running in 5.1 Surround".

Foley itself seems like a long study (read an article on it recently in Electronic Musician), but micing Foley with multi-mics and/or trying to find 5.1 capable FX plugins? Good luck! I hope for your sake that you have a lot of time to pull this together. I think I would want to do about another year's research before I tackled this kind of project. Regards... Steve
