Gotta love the stuff. It's so sexy! Been watching it since 6th grade. I'd get up 2 hours earlier than I had to just so I could watch G-force. Never realized back then how racy the stuff got. Now there are cartoons that would be "X" if they had to be rated. Some of it is and for sale at porn shops. They even have the stuff in print. Comics, magazines devoted to it...
Which brings me to my point (had to get around to it sometime). Is anime used to advertise stuff in magazines cool, or does it just make the company look cheezy? Case in point, there's an ad in Jan. 2001 issue of EM on page 194 that features a tightly-clad female warrior amime character. She has huge eyes, huge breasts, yet a demure waist and bare hips and ass. She seems to be holding cables in her right hand, conveniently cropped so you can't see the ends. This may even be a case of plagiarism.
What do you think? Acceptable use of exciting imagery to get your product sold, or degrading to women, the engineering profession, and anime fans in one fell swoop?

------------------
--------------
Angelo Quaglia
AQ Productions |

I remember an ad in a guitar mag back in the 70s, advertising a new synth company. It had a picture of a large-breasted blonde in a tight shirt, with the words 'ARP' and 'MOOG'
in half-circles under her breasts. The caption made some reference to "the big two".
HEHEHE...So where are they now? Where will
Digidesign, Steinberg, and Soundscape be in
20 years? But I digress...
Sex is used to sell darn near everything on the planet. Ever look through a motorcycle mag? Look at TV commercials.
One of the big attractions to becoming a
musician is SEX! I've yet to meet a musician who never got l__d after having played a gig,
at least once. Some musicians make it their every-gig goal! So, it's only logical that sex is used to sell musician's gear.
Is it degrading to women? Yes. Is some anime degrading to women? Yes. Is using the sex angle in advertising degrading to the engineering profession? Well, hehehe, is that same tactic degrading to the toothpaste
manufacturing profession? Is using anime for
advertising harming anime fans? Well, is using Fred Flintstone to sell vitamins harming kidz?
I don't think using anime in advertising is a bad thing, it's really just a matter of
the advertiser's 'taste' in selecting 'appropriate' anime figures.
|

Anime is not just about sex, it's about high drama. Kinda like soap operas.
Cartoons sans comedy.
|

i think there's been a small but growing amount of 'womanly' presence in the recording 'media' (zines, trades, etc.)....check out the Manley pre/eq/mic ads, there's a smokin' bubbalicous in an Avalon premp/eq advert PLUS have you checked out the latest BASF ads? the one with the topless blonde hawking BASF tape? i don't really mind the infiltration of the 'sex' angle in our industry (maybe we're soooo used to it by now), i even like to see them every now and then -- it breaks up the monotony of consoles, knobs, LEDs etc. etc.
my 2 cents. |

i dont know if it degrades women. women should be proud of their form, the ones who feel degraded are simply too self-conscience... have you lookeld in the womens magazines... tits and ass all over the place. |

Ujaku, I'm curious about this 'womanly presence' in Manley adds. Do you mean Eveana, the company president? (I've assumed that's who that is I've seen in the adds in the snake skin jacket.) I don't think she's trying to exploit her body to sell product.
I dunno, I think selling equipment with almost nekid chicks is juvenile and it reinforces the boy's club atmosphere. I've met plenty of talented female musicians and on occaision competent female engineers, but there are so few of the later, the competency ratio is better for women then men in my experience. I don't think we should be putting up barriers to anyone who can do good work. If you want to see skin, there are plenty of magazines where you can do that already.
da Bear |
