Anybody had to read this popular corporate novella about "Hem", "Haw", "Sniff", and "Scurry"? The moral to the story being that if you don't help sell the company you will be canned. (Or at least that's how it's working at my job). A cloud of discontent has descended on my workplace as everyone (but the new boss) looks to get out before being fired.
There's been a coup at my work. After 8 years of merrily working my butt off for these folks--making concert spots, motorsports spots, etc.; doing sound design in post score, VO work, and writing copy; it looks like the end of the road.
I am not bragging when I say that I have logged enough editing hours on Pro Tools to be in the top 10% of users. It's also not a stretch to say that with the frantic pace of work at my current job that I have made more commercials than most producers make in a lifetime--and I'm only 30.
I am highly qualified, skilled and creative--but how do I look for a new gig?
It also looks like I'll have to relocate--unless I get lucky here in Indianapolis. What a shame--my hobby-studio is finally starting to sound good.
--Jim Kuczkowski
Pro Tools specialist
Voice Over
Copy Writer
Commercial Producer
Music Engineer |

Bummer Jim...bartender, get Jim a stiff belt of his favorite poison...my tab.
So, I take it you're one of those 'creative guys' that waits for a 'work order' to bounce through the door...perhaps it's time to really start building a Rolodex of your own, maybe develop some of the "clients" to be your clients...
It's a thought...best of luck!! |

Jim,
You should certainly be able to find commercial work - I hope you're making an "audio resume" now. But consider going out on your own. If you have enough clients who are loyal to you, you can make it happen. Of course, some heavy marketing is in order, but if the base is there, the rest is relatively easy.
I slid into my own business from radio - just gradually built up freelance clients until I could bail out. If you want to talk sometime, I could give you my 2c on the phone.
But I think this will be a positive thing in your life - eventually. Hang in there. And never burn any bridges.

Dan Popp
Colors Audio
USA |
