compression mode when stereo mic'ing accoustic git?

Hi.

Wondering if you guys have any preferences on this.
compression in dual mode or stereo [linked] mode.

when i recorded with xy pair, compressing slightly to tape [daw] in dual mode seemed ok dynamicaly....
I rerecorded using spaced pair as it sounded better frequency wise, but had strange image shifts.
Resorted to dual[linked] compression mode.

Any thoughts on this?

Yea, linked mode works from the sum of the RMS detector and regulates the compression on both sides equally for that very reason. It is most common on stereo tracks to use the linked mode.

If you don't, either side could limit more and cause the center to drift around, this can be used as an effect of sorts, an example would be to have the compression of a kick on one side effect the level of another track on the other. I have heard the same remark about the quality of the sound, it can be done, but it is tough to get exact dynamic levels from your sources to hold it center.

Using single (unlinked) mode allows the compressor to process 2 individual tracks without effecting each other.

Maak,
This all depends on if you are micing this as a stereo pair or at the neck and at the soundboard to combine for tone. If it's a stereo pair then linking would be in order. If your micing for tone (highs from the neck and lows and mids from the soundboard) then it would be correct to keep the comp in dual mode. Seeing as you’re using 2 4033's I would assume your making this a stereo track. 2 or 3 dB of compression at 2 to 1 or 4 to 1 with a fast attack and release should do the trick. Happy trackin' ..... Fats...Only 2-3 dB compression Surprised

Is this maximum ammount [at peaks]????

Maak,
If your going for a natural sound that would be correct. If you want a more compressed sound then a higher ratio slower release and up to 6 dB of reduction will be ok. Of course you can apply as much reduction as you wish, the world won't stop turning. Use what sounds good to you. These are general "rule of thumb" settings I have arrived at in my experience. Fats
