My first recording

Hi All!

First of all, I am new to this forum. My name is Christiaan. I'm a 14 years old boy from Holland. I really like recording. I play in a little band, called Error. We recorded our first song at my place. I used this to record:
- my drummic-set
- music instruments
- 4 channel mixer
- my cpu: Pentium III 450
- software: Cubase VST32 5.1

Not bad for a first effort. There were a lot of things I liked , for example the guitars and the cymbals, kick and snare tones. I thought the hi hat was waaaaay to loud. Did a drummer mix this? My rule, don’t let blind people drive and don’t let drummers mix Very Happy

(just joking). I also thought the vocals need more mids and highs and also need to be louder. They are very muffled. The guitar solo didn’t seem to have anything to do with the song. It needs to be a little more in tune and thought out. All in all, good effort for a first stab. …. Fats

I agree!

I remember when I was recording at 14. I had a pair of 565SD shure mics and a hitachi cassette deck and would sneak in bars and with my long hair and thin gotee (I looked 18 sounded 21) I would record my ass off...and they still sound pretty good!

look at the compression and distortion (dynamics of the vocals) Fats is right with his high hat comment..and considering the limitations of the equipment, you did damn fine for a first recording.

The musicianship is great!@!!!

You are doing it and that is what matters most.

I listened on my office speakers (not shabby) and the bass balance was better than a lot of folks are doing that think they are the Shit!

I sincerely can tell you now, you are no longer a boy. You are a young Man!!!

Keep it up my friend and let us work with you some and help out and even with your 4 track...we can make it sing!

Keep the heads clean If the mixer is 4 track cassette to daw) and don't let the levels go above -3 for now per track. When you mix it, keep it below zero. Do not be afraid to try wild eq settings to get the mix right to overcome the limitations of the mic pres, tape format and general mixer.

What speakers you have?

Could you experiment with listening to more than one set?

IF you had a 300K dollar setup, yea..I can chew it up (tell you step by step what to do) but for you on that equipment that I hear....you have a future in this with us!

Mostly, I am hearing the equipment more than I am hearing blatant mistakes.

Look at this post 3 times and consider everything I said.
