I'm in the market for an 8 channel set of converters with preamps to go into the ADAT on my digi 002. I'm wondering if any of you have have USED BOTH. I know many have used one of them and will tell me that it is the best thing in the world, but I would really prefer to hear from somebody who's played with both. I know I need to get the ADAT card for the octopre, so that's not a problem. To me, I've always seemed to like the presonus pres a little more than focusrites. I really wish that there was an insert so that I could just use the converter for a selected channel and bypass the preamp. I know the LT version of the digimax does this, but I really want to stay 96K going in. Also, I am a little confused on the Octopre for this. It says 96K sampling rates, but it also says that if you use all 8 channels that it will only work up to 48K. I really really would like to stay 96K to mixdown. So, my questions:
Comparisson of the preamps
Can I record 8 channels of 96K in the octopre?
Tell me that the Digimax is not DEAD SEXY looking.
Why don't they give me the option of using my own pre? |

Yes, as long as it isn't the LE version. The normal version has an ADAT option with two ADAT outs and you need both to have 8 x 96KHz. You'll need 2x ADAT in on your 002. How many ADAT ins on the 002? |

It is only possible to transmit 4 channels of 96kHz signal over the lightpipe format. The only way around it is if a preamp has two separate cards that transmit 4 channels a peice, which is what I think cfaalm was getting at. Even if your preamp can transmit all 8 channels via 2 lightpipe connections at 96kHz, your 002 does not support 8 channels at 96kHz, hence the single optical input connection. If you want to work in 96kHz with the 002, you are limited to 4 channels via the lightpipe input.
I hope this helps. |

As far as I know, my own 002 doesn't hold 96k on ADAT ! So you can only get 8 digital inputs at 48k.
96k's only on s/pdif (2 chanels) |

Very weak. Everytime I do any upgrading I want to go back to analog tape. Well, that does help. Thanks a bunch guys. I think I'll actually probably get the LT presonus. It has unbalanced inserts that you could use to actually single click in a preamp, which I think is pretty cool. Thanks a lot for all your help duders! |

Wow. I haven't heard a whole lot of noise about the onyx. I have heard good things about the new onyx stuff in general, but not that pre. It has the best features from all the options I've looked at all in this one box. Plus, if I ever go HD I could use it there. Looks like a winner to me. Thanks! |
