sound mixer/boom op

I saw an ad on craigslist looking for someone to fill this position on a low budget shoot in town. There is not much oppurtunity to gain this kind of audio experience here. I was wondering if anyone could give me a general technical description of what a 'sound mixer' does pertaining to shooting video. Would a low budget film have 1 person act as both sound mixer and boom op, or would it definetly be a 2 person job.

Depends on the shoot.

I have done my share of having a Nagra strapped to my side with a pair of headphones on and doing the boom work at the same time but most times there will be a seperate boom operator and sound recordist.

It is hard to concentrate on doing both but it can be done. So much depends on what they want to accomplish with the on location sound and how much they can afford for crew.
