Hi folks, this is my first post... but I value any opinions, good or bad!
I engineered and produced this last month... but it is not my band. So, feel free to comment on the style and songwriting; but that's not me. What I'm really looking for is overall mix comments and suggestions. It's done and duplicated as an EP, so I most likely won't change it at this point... but for future projects, I'd like some feedback so I can try new things.
Here are two of the mp3s (the band is named "Cry to the Blind", emo/modern rock).

and

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!!

Just listened to the first one. I think the mix is excellent. Personally, I would change around a few of the places where there are backing vox(i.e. is some spots where they are prominent, I would've left them out and vice versa) but I think that's just my preference. Great mix. |

I agree on the vox, some of that is the band's choice and some was my own.
Would you mind being more specific as to which parts didn't sit well with you? As I said, I'm not really going to change these, but sometimes you don't notice something unless it's pointed out... could I trouble you to elaborate on that one?
Thanks for the input! |

Nice mix. You were successful at making the guitars sound really big while still leaving room for the bass to exist under it and the vocal to exist on top of it.
It was a nice choice to throw a drum reverb into the right channel. That method generally gives good spacial definition to an instrument. That being said, I think there is too much drum reverb in the left channel -It takes over the actual drum sounds. I'd rather hear how an effect affects an instrument, rather than the effect itself.
Cheers! |

I listened to the first song, I think that the music wasn't my "style" but it sounded good. Maybe a little generic. The vocals sounded good. I feel that the vocals are what the music is based on. But I thought that you are doing good. Like all good bands, the first cd or so sounds like annother band. I always make a point to encourage musicianns. Keep it up. |

Thanks for the feedback!
landonarkens, I am still at question of how to properly pan and mix the guitars... so I'm glad you like that part of it!
As far as the drum reverb, I'm not exactly sure what you mean... I don't have the actual reverb panned in particular... but I have the instruments panned. What drum instrument is it that you hear too much on?
The drums are digital, so they're easy to change if I need to... it's always tough to mix them in and have them sound human without hiding them too much. Thanks for the input folks! |

hey
loved it. i'm a guitar player so i loved the gtr mix. all in all li iked the mix. i agree with earlier post though that theres a bit too much (IMHO) reverb on the drums. everything else was solid.
speaking of the drums, what did you use to program them -- drum machine, sequencer??

It's a midi sequencer, FL Studio. I've used it for years and I have a ton of my own "tricks" with it. I don't write the parts, I just have the drummer make a boom-box recording of the song and I lay it out from there. It can take quite some time, considering the fact that some drummers don't really ever play the same exact beat twice... but that also helps it sound more human. Which drums in particular had too much reverb? I use the same basic setup and I can definitely cut some reverb on some of them... any suggestions? Or is it everything?
Thanks! |

i think the overall drum mix had a bit too much reverb. you could hear more of the effect than the drums themselves. just dial down the effect mix on your reverb for the drums. i would think that'd do it.
cheers!
