Im up to buy a mixer, but im not clear at all about whats gonna be the real benefits from a analog device like the ATB toft over the D command in my final sound...what do you think? i really need an expensive control surface or its better to have a mixer like the toft? by the way, what do you think about the ATB? You do know the D Command is strictly for PT, while the Toft and any other mixer can be used with any platform, right? D Command, Icon, etc, do not have any sound - they just facilitate playback of what is in PT and make it easier to manipulate, mangle, tweak, etc...

If you want your projects to have a sound to themselves, a mixer is in order...I have heard the Toft at Summer Namm, and it seemed pretty cool and good bang for the buck...

Ok, you still are not comparing apples to apples. You cannot buy a D-Command for the same price as a ATB. They do the same functions.

If you find that you need to have more hands on PT simultaneously, or, you just can't seem to cross over to the consoleless way of working, then a PT controller might work. Unless you get the two largest controllers, you really aren't gaining much over a Mackie HUI in features.

If you need mic pres, EQ, auxes, etc for tracking, headphone monitor mixing, and summing, then go with a console. There are lots of console choices now.

There really aren't enough people using the PMI/Toft ATB yet to know how it is going to hold up. Inital reports say that it is not a console that is good for the money. It is an incredible console period. I haven't heard it, seen it, touched it. I hope to.

By "incredible console period", are you referring to the long period of time before we will have reasonable feedback from users?

There is nothing that the d command or control can do that your mouse can't besides chance the monitor levels.

On that not, I love using the icon to mix. having every thing automated is a real nice bonus as you can flatten the board and pick up exactly where you left off in a mix. Or make your slight adjustments to the levels that your client want with out having to go back and try to make the same mix twice.

But its only for protools, and considering its just a controller and has no pres, eq's, and what ever else you are used to using on a board, it comes with a large price tag.

The icons are fairly user friendly. although with all the soft keys and digital whimwham and flimflam they can get confusing. But every thing you need is there, and after a wile you can start working pretty damn fast with out having to use your mouse much at all.

One thing that can for sure be said is that the icons are selling faster and to more studios then any thing else on the market. Which is nice for some one like me going to school and using one, since now I can go to a large number of studios and knows exactly how to run the nerve center of it all.

I have quit a few hours under my belt with the icons now, so feel free to ask any questions.

No. What I believe Sheet meant is that "it's an incredible console...PERIOD!" (Not just "good for the money"). Please forgive his poor communication skills... Laughing
My personal experience with Toft's outboard gear is not great. But, maybe this new console really does deliver the goods.

Digidesign's controllers do much more than just adjusting level. Imho they're worth the price. Toft atb. Personally never used, but used other equipments from them, wasn't really satisfied with it.
