I like your song! It has a great feel to it.

I don't have enough experience to give you tips for better sound. I was listening to this trough my headphones and it sounded nice to me. It needs a little work when the rock chapter begins, the vocal is not sitting in the mix at that time. I think i heard some "pops" at second 24 and 27.

Great song!

Thank you Music_Junky for u`r input. Actually the whole groove is off about 25 sec into the song.

Another thing is that I recorded the guitar with reverb!! That was a mistake as during the rockpart there is way to much reverb on the guitar.

I think maybe I have to replace the guitar with some kind of strings during this part.

The vocals was recorded with a soundelux U195 by the way..

Anyone else got some tips?

I did not find anything wrong with the groove i just heard a click sound at sec 24 might be an audio region with out a fade-in or out.

The groove is fine!!

Sounds pretty good to me. Some of the more advanced guys and mods may be able to disect it more, and give you a better review. However, for just a first glance it sounds good. I did think may be the vocals got a little (too) loud around 02:04-ish. Also, there was what sounded like some paper rustlin' or something in the last few seconds of the song. Overall, not bad.

Am re-listening to it as I write...

The vocal sound the strongest. It sounds great to me.

The guitar actually sounds fine to me...good tone and I like that kinda 'hawaii vibe' reverbed sound a lot. though it could use a panned millisecond delay with guit on one side and delay on the other...to bring it into both channels for a more stereo effect. (delay extremely short within say 30 milli but over 5 milli so its part of the original sound. Guitar right, delay left in this case. the guitar just sounds a tad 'mono then panned' if you knows what I mean?

IMO ( and this is all opinion remember, unless you are going for public/radio play where these things are a given and very important) the drums sound a bit too 'roomy' and perhaps could do with more punch. They site a bit 'back in the mix' and 'seperate' for me. Did you close mic and ambient mic? add room reverb later? just overhead? Not sure..could sound closer given the upfront vocal or even further if you are going for a bigger sound.

the organ, maybe that could be panned left rather than right and that might help widen the image. It kicks in right where the guitar is, and that wouldn't really be happening on stage...unless the guitarist was in front of the organ, or sitting on it
Laughing

re vox: they sound great. Maybe a bit loud at chorus. Perhaps some reverb at chorus for impact, and level down a bit.

.he has a good voice. you have definately captured it well. Aim for that kinba quality and the guitar quality in all your parts.

So really that just leaves the drums and a bit of panning and it would stand out.

PS: i just put my u195 on ebay! after hearing this: DOH!. the mic suits this guys voice I reckon. good choice. Sounds quite expensive and suitable for radio etc.

PPS: listening to it on Dynaudio BM15a's just for your reference.

First of all.. Thank you for u`r replies..

To start with the drums first.. I totally agree with u`r thoughts. The drums where recorded at a local school in a pretty big room/hall so the roomsound is a problem. The only additional reverb is a little bit on the snare. I closemic`ed everything. + two overheads. I think the snare is ringing a bit too much. I tried to gate it but I didn’t manage to get the result that I wanted.

I`m pretty satisfied with the guitarsound. The rhythm is a mic`ed up combo and the lead in the beginning is recorded directly in to the soundcard using TC Powercore TCThirty ampsimulator.

What do you think about the bass? I always have trouble with the bass. When it sounds OK in my controllrom it usually sucks in every other room. (yeah I know – room treatment – working on it). The bass is a blend between a mic`ed up amp and DI.

I posted another song here a couple of days ago (yellow house – check it out) and when I listen to it now I realise the bass is waaay to heavy on the lowest frequencies.

What about the overall compression?? Should I try to compress it a bit more?

..and Antho.. don’t sell u`r U195. I use mine on everything. Its great

Yo. Apologies for plethora of typos in last post...happens when listenin and typing at same time.

Bass...hmmm, so quiet I didn't notice it first three times around... though I guarantee if It wasn't there I would've noticed! So it could come up a bit. the groove is great as someone mentioned b4. The bass also grooves and i def would have noticed if it was askew even tho I didn't notice it. Thats the thing about basslines...worth spending a bit of time on re: listening to the mix OUT AND ABOUT, as in car, club, different set of speakers...anything you can get your grubby mits on, short of listening on monitors that portray a flattish bottom end in a reasonable room. the bassline, so I heard once, is the bit people subconciously listen to when they hear a song.

Of course you will always have trouble with bass if A) your room aint treated and B) you have mon's which don't give you the accurate description of what your bass is doing down there in the mix. It is EASY to be fooled even with a good monitoring system. My advice would be to listen to some bands that do this kinda music over your cans and mons (and there a enough around that sound reasonably similar) and simply aim for that level of bass as a benchmark. As mentioned I have the dynes and mt rooms pretty good, but if I don't compare mixes I certainly come up with a mix that is 'mine' but often it just doesn't fit with other songs of the same style. comparison, not artistic: but techincal, is good for a mix.

I should mention that for demo this is far good enough. but again it depends on what you are aiming for.

love that guitar & vox (with a bit of that pan delay...would be rockin..please ask if you are unclear and i could even post a demo of what I mean on my sound click site - im in there aswell) ! It's so much about performance....

PS: constant in fear of everything that may have slipped by.,.that bit....just a bit loud. is that the bridge? i think i said chorus before...

is your band? your vocal? wot pre's u usin out of interest? cheers

Antho..

I wont be home until Monday so I really cant do anything with the song right now. (I travel a lot in my job) But if you want to post an example on u`r sound.click site that would be great.

I use to be in this band as lead guitarist, but I had to quit due to lack of time. But on this recording I play lead guitar and bass.

The vox was recorded with a Soundelux U195 through a Great River 1NV. And the drums through 8 TL Audio valve preamps. The guitaramp was a Mesa/Boogie TremOVerb 2x12 combo. (closemic`ed with a shure sm57 and a royer 121)

I listening to the song as I write this and I agree with both Antho and freesignal.. The vocals could come down a bit on the bridge…

I really liked this.

To me, it sounds like it needs that killer guitar part. All of the rest of the pieces are in place and it simply needs that accent guitar thing to kick it in the ass.

The guitar thats there now is a wonderful 'bed track'. Its got vibe and it carries nicely throughout the song. I wouldnt replace it with anything. Its never a mistake to record with an effect that you like originally. It kind of sets a guideline and makes a decision so everything can move forward following this lead.

The bass needs to be more up front and carrying the groove along. Compress the DI and use an EQ on the mic'd bass to create this space. Youre looking for size with the DI and tone with the mic.

The snare needs to get that sheen on it. Again, something along the lines of a 1176 kinda compression on it. It needs to crack just a bit more and also have some underlying substance. This is where you check the speaker cone excursion as you solo that track to listen. The snare has to absolutely move air or its going to just lay there.

Get the kik involved here too. One works off the other and the bass focuses it all.

The vocals sound fine and I wouldnt change a thing. All will be right with the improvements of the other instruments.

This , as a demo, is way above 90% of the submissions the companies get.
