Compress before, after, or during with a plugin?

What is the bestway to do this? Should it bedone before with an outboard compressor, or after with a plugin? Or should it bedone with a plugin while it is being recorded?

The answer to your question is yes. But if it doesn't sound good, then, no.

Make sure to tell your vocalist to "self-compress" as much as possible. All this means is moving father away from the mic when vocals get hot and close and snug when they get quiet. Experienced vocalist will do this in there sleep.

Also, a common trick in voice over can be used just as effectively on a vocal track. Try setting up two mics to get the sound you are looking for. One nice and close with a pop filter 2-3inches away from the addressing side of the mic. And a second, slightly above 4-6inches behind and at an angle pointing right at the back of the pop filter. When the vocal gets hot cut the quiet mic and vice versa when it gets cold. This allows you to get really a full sound (especially after compression) no matter the dynamics of the vocalist.
