gimmie gear

PostPosted: Thu Apr 26, 2007 10:11 am Reply with quoteBack to top

ok heres what Im thinking about.. First I"ll tell you what I have..

Mackie 1642 VLZ Pro
Presonus Firestation 8in/8out
Nuendo3.0
Yamaha SPX90
Roland SRV-3030
Focusrite Platinum Penta Stereo Comp.

At the moment I track all Vocals, Bass, Guitars and Keys thru the Mackie
and using plugs for comp and effects... All drums are done with a E-set via midi to Dfhs..
I mix everything to a stereo bus and Dump,etc...
But what I would like to do is
Use Nuendo like a tracking Machine send Back to the Mackie and Mix there
and send back into Nuendo to a stereo track. Is that possible while Nuendo also plays the individual tracks..... Question

Thanks Jerry

that's whats refered to as analog summing... and yeah you could do it by setting up the outputs of the firestation as submixes from nuendo... and there are some good reasons to do it if you happen to have say an old neve like remy... but frankly at the level your playing at i doubt there would be much advantage...

So its possible, however being the fact I dont have a Quailty board Its quite pointless, as I would not achive a preimium quality from doing that.or from the other gear that I have... Cool I can live with that.. onward and upward to better gear... Thanks Jerry

Your gear is perfectly great! I've made lovely recordings with what you have. You have a nice system for making good recordings.

I got lucky landing my vintage Neve consoles but I've recorded on plenty of mixers like yours and am happy to play those for anybody. It's not the gear, it's the engineer. It's like a car. We'd all like to have Bentleys, Rolls, Porsche, Corvettes but a Chevy Impala, Chrysler Caravan, Volkswagen Bug, gets you there also and only as well as you're driving skills allow. Once you have "mastered" your equipment and are making superb recordings with what you have, only then should you step up to better equipment. Let's hear some stuff you have accomplished thus far? You want to just learn how to drive and then get into an IndyCar. You don't want to go from drivers ed to racing cars. You want to hone your audio driving skills first. Learn how to walk before you run, etc. etc..

What she said

and

With only 8 out your gear is going to limit how many tracks or stereo subs you can mixdown on the macike.

I do however feel like Im at my peak value with my Gear..

Other Gear I didnt List.
Monitors-- KrK St 6's Passive for some reason I like Passive over active.
Amp- Early 70's Harmon/Kardon 430 Twin Transformer
Mics-- Joe Meek Lg dia. condenser, Studio projects TB-1
Sm 57, Senhiser E-609

Im 43 yrs old and have been a Musician for over 25 yrs.
My recordings have gotten better over the last 5 yrs. It drives me to get
better recordings everytime I set behind the desk.. 1000's of hours trying to figure out how all this works and I think it has worked out for all the hard work I've put into it. Also now that I have moved from a rental to my own house and built a Studio in my basement and spending alot of time at the John L Sayers site . I hear things much more like I should. For what things are anyway. I'm looking forward to better recordings , Thats why I'm looking to do things differently if it makes what I do better than before..

Jbrax!! You guys are my family, since you're from my home state of Michigan. I think you guys have the spark? Since you are from Flint Michigan. Way to go! Some excellently produced quality metal.

The drums are big punchy, with lots of space and snap. I like the reverb since it appeals to my 1980s memories. Finally, somebody pouring an abundant, maybe over abundant, plate style reverb to simulate a nice big room for the drums. It's cool but they're almost too big.

Great sounding lead vocals and backups. Along with a relatively solid bass line.

This sounds to me like it was very carefully thought through. You have very accomplished sounding chops. And so your hard work and perseverance has paid off with quite a quality product. This is what I've been talking about. Your stereo image and perspective creates a huge sounding image.

I feel stupid? Since I have nothing bad to say. I can't think of anything to say to denigrate the product. No wise ass cracks. I don't know what's wrong with me? I think I'm losing my edge? I think you have the edge? I wish I could offer some kind of destructive feedback? Maybe I need to get drunk?

WOW ! I dont know what to say But " Bring it home Sister!"
Thank you for the words of encouragement.. I still feel like
theres some sort of Musical Quality missing.. But that could be in mastering it's self..Aisle of Delivery is a very good band and Im glad they deceided to record with me.

I am still looking forward to getting things better and using more outboard gear and using my mixer to do the mixing with or a larger mixer if need be.. I just dont feel
plug-ins work nearly as good as hardware. So its time to get back to work,do some more readingand experimentingand maybe 1 day I'll be happy

or Maybe NOT!....
Have a Great Day Remy

Jerry
