Where To Start?

Hello everybody, I am about as newbish to all aspects of recording as possible. I am a drummer and I want to learn as much as possible. What I really would like to do is: Become fluent in pro-tools, Be able to run the Synclavier or whatever the next best thing is, and be able to write music through the synclavier and record drums to it.

Really become fluent in pro-tools, microphones, and all aspects of recording is my main goal. Could someone point me in the direction of where to start? Books? Essential hardware?

Sept one: Be prepared to spen a lot of money.

Seriously though, the first thing I would consider doing is going to the local studio and see if they need a slave for a few hours a week. Hopefully they have space for you.

If you have the money to spend, you might want to look into a digi 002 or Mbox 2 Pro. The rest is really a matter of practice and practical application. Read and ask questions. Experiment.

http://womb.mixerman.net has a lot of pure protools info. Check Kenny Giola's videos and also the Mix it like a record forum. Also buy Charles Dye's Mix it like a record DVD.

For mic info do forum searches on Harvey Gerst. He is not the last word in mics, but he is a great teacher for someone starting out. here is a killer thread: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=27030

That will get you started, but you really need to buy a fair amount of stuff and start using it to get in the know.
