Hi

For recording acoustic guitar (and sometimes placing the mic within the guitar itself), which would be better: the DPA 4060 or the 4061?

In general, there are far to many variables to clearly say any one mic is really better than another mic for any source including acoustic guitar, yet alone which of these two specific mics would be best for your use on acoustic guitar. If these are the mics that you have to choose from, then do some real audio engineering on your own, record using both of them, compare them, and then come to your own conclusions. This is what a real audio engineer does.

Supposedly the only difference between them is higher SPL handling going together with a little higher self noise. Inside the guitar is not getting real loud, so the lower self noise of the 4060 would be what to go for.

Thanks Gunnar

That's the way I was figuring it. According to the specs, the 4060 can handle SPLs up to 134dB. I was just wondering if the level inside the guitar gets up there -- I would be very surprised if it did -- but then sound can be a funny
thing.

FWIW,

I own a pr. of 4060's, and tho they sound pretty good, they're still noisy (by my standards!) If you're not playing ambient or sparsely, they do sound quite good, but even with a quiet pre (Hardy/Buzz/Neve etc) they show their self noise readily.

For live work I think they'd be great, but for critical stuff, mics with a lower self-noise would be a better bet (IMHO).

As always, YMMV greatly

Best with it,
