New to recording. I am recording a 4 piece Beatleish group and an Alternative group. For mikes I Have a C1, 2-c1000s', and several 57's. Also an Alesis 24 board, Blue Max, etc. Preamps I am considering are the Presonus MP20, Joemeek twin Qcs, Joemeek Vc3Q, HHB10 Tube Mic Pre and a few others. Does anyone have opinions on these or other preamps which will make for good recordings? Thanks, alba359

For under $700 and you want a multi channel... look at the DaviSounds 4 channel preamp. For the price you can't go wrong. Syteks can be had used for around $700, another no brainer. Get something transparent for your 1st good pre.

How about a 12x2 mackie VLZ-Pro until you can afford something really good and longterm? Middle of the road quality is not much better than the VLZ (or at all). YOMV<p>Best Wishes,

Except in my opinion, DaviSound is in the same league as Grace Design or Great River...

Davisound? New to me. Any corroborating thumbs up? Their web page is obvious enough to find.<p>Bear

Well, just so you know, the TB-3 actually has the same mic pres as the TB-6. The name of the pres are called "Mic All" pres. I like them so much that those are the pres that'll be be in my console.

So... can you compare these to typical sound benchmarks - such as Mackie VLZ/VLZ Pro pres and the Great River MP2MH? They're obviously going for a clean sound - great.<p>The typical distance between the Mackie and Great River for me lies in detail/3d space, particularly in off-axis sound. Not to mention headroom. <p>If they are really in the league of the GR, then that's wonderful. I'm wondering how they can do it - hand-assembled - for so little $$$.<p>Graham

I think my replies and links in this tread will answer a lot of questions: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=253f78f46677496210a01147e4d5e0a3&threadid=31888
Plus, those recordings I posted above.<p>Also, one thing I can say about the "Mic All" pres is that their so much more open than the Mackie. I agree, it's hard to beat Mackie for the price... You usually don't notice much improvement at all until you reach Great River area and that's a HUGE difference in price!<p>About headroom, well is near +32 dBV before clipping good? Oh and it really is true about the "No Padding Necessary"/"overload-proof" part!

Interesting. FWIW, I own a Great River MP2MH & MP2NV. I could definitely foresee getting the API 3124 in the future, but I'd also like something cleaner in a 4-channel unit. This is why I'm curious about the TB-6.<p>Hmm. I'd venture to guess that having Fletcher or Harvey borrow your TB-3 & TB-1 for review would satisfy a lot of people's concerns.<p>Regards,<p>Graham

Well, to one extent, I agree! And to the other, I'm not so sure. Here's one take and WHY you haven't heard of them:
http://members.aol.com/lhd522/Philos2.html<p>Now, where I agree, I really don't see Fletcher or Harvey as your typical reviewer or "reviewers" at all! They simply USE it, develop their OWN opinions, are willing to tell what THEY think, BUT, are STRONG advocates of actually trying it one's self; hence Fletcher's unbeatable return policy!<p>My main thing is that I think it simply needs to be heard! I'd like to get them on 3D Audio's next Pre CD for one reason only. NOT so that ANYONE can form an opinion from that, but SIMPLY to get the name out WITHOUT an ad; as they'll NEVER do!
