Running 2 instances of XP????

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have basic question:
I’m using my pc for both audio/DAW and internet and it’s time to clean up this overlap. However, I have room/cash for my one current pc. Can I install 2 instances of XP pro – optimizing one for Audio use and leaving the other for day to day stuff? Here are some specs.

AMD X2 dual core +4400
2gigs of DDR2 RAM
4 250g Maxtor Hd – currently RAID stripe mirroring
Geforce 8800
Mackie Onyx firewire sound card (connected to an onyx 1220 mixer)
Sonar 7
Acid pro 6

You know m7, I was wondering the same thing? I've had a dual-boot machine with 2000 Pro & XP Pro but never tried to do what you've asked. I'd actually like to do that also but for different reasons. One of my workstations has been upgraded and must have XP with service pack 2. Unfortunately, my Pinnacle DV 500 video card is not compatible with service pack 2 and will only operate under service pack 1a. Very frustrating. But of course, you could also install onto a secondary hard drive and just tell your machine bios which disk drive you want to boot with. Not quite as convenient but should do what you want if you can afford the extra $50 for another disk drive? Hey, at least it's not $500 anymore.

That was excellent information that Jeremy posted Jbrax. Some of which, I already knew, but not all. Thank you Jeremy. But it does not address the situation that I brought up. This crap regarding service pack 1 & 2. My situation would still require dual-boot and/or separate drives. And not just the optimization of the operating system for audio/video purposes. But of course, I digress as this was not the question. I think I'm talking to myself again? You are? Yeah. I didn't think so? Yup.

I think I put this in one of the other forums, but this also looks like a good place for this XP PC audio tune-up guide.

First though, before you do anything, make a new restore date.

Then make a new user profile, Mine is the name of my program
(SONAR PROFILE)

now strip it down

Thanks for all this useful information. Is it right to say you could run two instances of Xp on one machine but that the DAW optimization would be watered down to allow for bios settings (network etc) that the other 'internet' OS would still need...?

Thanks for all the info. So, is it right to say that you could run a separate user profile with all the relavent DAW changes and keep your day to day internet profile - except the PCI latency and Hard drive config stuff?

Given the need for audio data to be on a separate drive - How might I configure 4 sata Raid drives?

You can boot 2 xp on same machine. I did that on my old dell laptop with great success.

You have to format your HD create 2 partitions innstall xp on one of them and then the other. Now you have 2 instances of xp that do not know about each other.

Next time you boot you will be asked if you want to runn winxp og winxp.

why not just use different hardware profiles with things like network cards and stuff disabled or enabled, thats what I do...

Because I wanted to be able to install fresh DAW xp without messing up my school xp instance and vice versa.
