DVD TRANSFER

Hello all. I hope this question belongs in this forum. I was recording a cd at my house. At the time i only had a 12 track. So after the 12 traxx were filled, i took the session to another friends house and dumped it onto his computer ,a mac. I was paying him to finish the recording as it got done. Needless to say the cd never got finished.

After about a year or so i finally got a semi-pro studio together.(semi-pro equipt, loozer engineer.)Since i was now capable of finishing the cd myself, i asked him to burn it down for me and I'd handle it. He did, and bein that it came from a mac and IM operating Windows it surely didnt work.
I Guess what i'm trying to find out is how am i gonna get what he's got burned on that dvd or whatever onto my PC.

Couple of questions:

1. What program did you use to record the tracks with?

2. Which program are you using now?

3. Which format were the tracks recorded in?

4. How did you transfer the 12 tracks to your friends mac to begin with?

If you can answer these i'll try and help you out more.

The only thing obvious that I can think of the now is that the tracks aren't in .wav format and are in .aiff format which are mac based. If this is the case you would need to convert the audio tracks to .wav.

Just an FYI, while I was reading this thread I took a random snare track in Vegas and rendered it to my desktop as a .aif file, then drag/dropped it into a new Vegas session - worked just fine.

I think the quickest, easiest way to get those tracks from your friend's Mac might be to have him burn them as separate audio tracks on an 'audio' cd, then bring them to your PC and rip them.

Though, I can't recall having a problem opening data CD's or DVD's on my PC (WinXP) that were burned on Mac OSX - I do, however, have problems trying to use a USB thumb drive to transfer files from one to the other...

Yes sir bent thats what he did,burn them to DVD or whatever.Every time i put it into the drive i get a message stating that windows cannot read it because the files could be corrupt or it came from another operating system. Thanx for the help by the by.

The trax were recorded onto an MD Data disc. which is the same as a mini disc but holds more info.

I took my recorder to his house and came out of my track direct outs via 1/4 cable into Pro Tools.

I'm a relative noob when it comes to Mac's.

Have you tried having him actually burn all of your tracks (in Itunes, or Toast) as a red-book CD Audio disc?

That should open in everything you put it in, and you can rip the tracks with Win Media Player if necessary - probably not the best idea, but one that I know will work in a pinch...

I guess this is obvious, but just in case...
Did the 'friend' add anything to the tracks that's worth keeping?
Seeing as how he didn't finish it - did he do anything at all?
Might be quicker to reimport from the original 12 track and finish it yourself if his contribution was nill.

What I was on about with the format was did your friend record the tracks in .wav or .aiff when you transfered your tracks to the pro tools session?

I'm not that familiar either with macs but I think .aiff files are mac based and wont work on a pc, but i'm not 100% sure on this.

I take it your now trying to load the pro tools session onto your pc but it won't let you?

I think your best bet is as bent mentioned, get your friend to burn the tracks to an audio cd and rip them in windows media player once he gives you the disc.

Alternatively, you could try and send someone on here one of the tracks and see if they can open it.

Holy crap, similar story!!!

Last night Dan from RC called me and said that a band came by to drop off their tracks and session files for him to mix.

Get this:
Their stuff was recorded on a Mac with PT (probably 7, not sure). We have PT 6 on a Mac at RC. Their files were burned onto (and this is where I assume the problem lies) a DVD-RW disc.

Dan could not get our Mac to open the disc AT ALL (begin scratching my head), but the two PC's we have could open it.
Confused

He was able to grab all but a few tracks due to a dang on 'cyclic redundancy error' - because of this error (which I assume is a fault of / on the disc itself), and the fact that some of the tracks were not the full length of the originals (according to the band - again scratching my head) I told him to have them re-burn their data, preferrably onto a CD-Rom.

We shall see what happens if and when they bring their new discs.
I'll let you guys know how this works out...

OK, well i have had a bit of a time trying to get him. So im gonna try a little more, and if it doesnt work out then i'll have to get somebody else to help.

Coz the thing is that i never kept the original MD Data files. Ive recorded over thos discs so many times the hardly work any more at all.So the only thing i really have is what is on disc.

Oh yeah the format thingy.Yeah i kinda knew that. just needed a little push.Umm not sure on that one though.But what you said about the pro tools session not loading on the pc is exactly right.

To end, i dont really expect to get a hold of this guy, hes on the road a bit, and is usually pretty busy with his band.So i may need some guidance. as of now , i really connot say i know any one else with a mac.

hope this helps...

Files on a MAC do not require a file suffix..(.XXX)
the MAC attaches a reference file that lets the MAC know what type of file it is. WIN OS needs that .123 suffix as part of the file name to understand what the file type is.
On a MAC you can have a file called MySong.
On WIN, it must be called MySong.wav (or.mp3, etc)
If you have QT pro, try adding the .aif suffix to it.
That may be all the help it needs.
My other thought is...the MD recorder used a CODEC that you don't have installed so it can't make sense of it..

You know something, I really appreciate it ,when anyone goes out of theyre way, to take time to try to inform me a little better. And im glad every time i see a response to one of my many problems, but it sometimes seems as if the post wasnt even read. I cant add any suffix, becuse the discs wont load at all. Unless im missing something. thanks though.

Nah, it's got nothing to do with codecs.
Audio codecs have nothing to do with whether or not a computer will read a CD or DVD data disc...

Somehow the problem (currently our problem) has to do with either the type or brand of media we're trying to open, or the burn process on the other end failed or did not finalize the disc.

thanks fer being aware of my situa. bent,

Id have to be pretty certain that the discs were finalized.Im willing to guess that the two discs wont load because of the compatibility issue or whatever.
I guess anyone could make a mistake,but it wasnt his first dance.

For others that have posted on this thread, Windows and Mac's will both open and run files containing these common suffixes: .WAV, .AIF, .MOV, .QT, .MPG, and many others that I cannot recall at the moment. Most DAWs, such as the older version of Vegas which I use can also edit, render, and save many platform specific and cross-platform media files.

The problem Will and I both are experiencing is DVD Data Disc related.
His problem is opening a DVD on a PC that was burned on a Mac, mine is that we (RC) cannot open a DVD on our Mac, even though the DVD was burned on another Mac...
