Try searching for pictures of studio plans. Generally you have a control room, a main room, an isolation booth for vocals and a relaxation room with a pool table, coffee machine, toaster, 1985 jukebox...well the contents of that room are to taste. In your case a sofa and telly.
Control room goes somewhere with a line of sight to the isolation booth(s) and main room. Generally in the middle.

And what sort of environment is it, a warehouse, ex-Church, the inside of a battleship?

I would suggest your actual recording room should go at the back of the building, further from the street.

Your room needs to be as big as the biggest thing you want to put in it and then some space.
A whole band at once? -> Big enough to put a band in.
Layering everything? -> Big enough for say, a drum kit.
Grand piano quartet? -> Big enough to put 4 grand pianos in it.

There are people who know a lot more about studio design than me, I can just give you a logical approach. Hopefully this is a good enough starting point.
