Console Furniture Build

Hi Everyone.

I thought someone might find some value in seeing this, so I'm posting pictures of the project I'm currently involved in. It's based around an old Tascam console, but just by lengthening or shortening the center frame, could be used for any mixing small format mixing desk.

I've got about $100 in the project so far. Now comes the hard part - sanding, trim, and finishing...yuk.

Nice work.

There are people who love to sand, trim, and finish. They think the hard part was done by you already!

Send one my way, would ya. I can so mess up a nice piece of wood with stain and polyurethane.

Btw, does anyone know what type of wood is best for rack rails? I'm guessing the plywood edge won't hold screws too well. I was thinking of maple, but I've had screws break off in it before. Pine maybe?...if I'm not taking the gear in and out too often.

Lovely looking cabinet work.

I have screwed into plywood instead of rack rails. I really prefer drilled & Tapped, nice steel rack rails which screwed into my plywood cabinets. Much more reliable and you don't have to worry about not getting the spacing correct. Also less of a sawdust problem by utilizing 10/32 machine screws instead of wood screws. My rack rails are both glued & screwed with nuts & bolts. A little more reliable as well since things go bouncing around inside the truck.

Beautiful cabinets are wonderful to look at and to use.

Yeah, Remy, I'm using steel rails for the verticals in the boxes, but I thought I'd try wood in the gently slanted parts since the weight tends to hang down rather than pull out at the bottom of the ears.

Impressive. Just needs some shiny compressors and stuff to fill it and it'll look great.

THAT is a small format console?? Yikes. How many channels is a big one?

Fffft. Donations? Hmm...I could send you a stash of irn bru bottles. You can take the empties to the store and refund them for 30p each.

32-48, well OK. If I ever find a use for more than 19 we'll need to expand.

Which BOOK could this be then? Yamaha's guide to live sound?

You know, THE BOOK. The one we all learned to be recording engineers by reading; the one that was written by THAT GUY. It's from the same series that most of my golf students read...no wait, that was a magazine...or was it a TV show?

I used pine for mine and it seems to work OK. I have had the same racks for 12 years, but I don't move much gear in and out of it since I switched to protools (besides, almost every peice of Alesis gear I own is now non-functional)
When I was building them I convinced myself that using wood instead of metal racks would cut down on ground loops (as long as I put a little bit of space between each unit). I never found out if this theory is correct, but at least pine was the cheapest way to go and I saved a few bucks!

Progress Update;

the console furniture is finally finished...well, except for the gaping holes in the sidecars. I guess I need to concentrate on buying some gear.

But first I have to work out the patch bay wiring thing. that'll be another topic.
