Hey, this is my first post on what loosk like an awesome forum!
I'm getting to the end of recording and mixing our EP and i'd really like some feedback before the mixes go out to mastering.
Its melodic metal, and is mixed with headroom. The gang chants need sorting out and the guitar leads are beign re-amp'd at the weekend
Anything you can hear in your speakers/phones that i can't in mine? Anything I need to be aware of with the mix to make it easier for a better master? (hope that makes sense, my brain is fried!)
http://www.whisperintheriot.com/wip/just_a_lie_27808.mp3
I'm using Pro Tools MPowered (nooob with it still) delta 44 Omni, Tannoy reveal 5a, beyer dynamic DT150
We recorded it all ourself so any tips/advice is welcome!
Thanks! |

See, this is why recording studios are disappearing. That track sounds good.
On the "gang chant" I would pull back on the reverb, and chorus. Increase the pre-delay so the transients don't get lost. Boost the sibilance so we can understand what is being said. Maybe the presence. Warp the audio to align some of the key words to make them more intelligible if necessary.
The guitar sounds like it could use some more EQ work. It seems to be burring the bass, and the lead vocal at times. Dipping the lows and mids may be a place to start. Maybe even a little ducking would help.
That's what I would try. I might tweak it listen, then say "gee... what was I thinking?"
The drums sound great! |

Hey man, that sounds good.
The one thing that comes to mind is that the lead and BG vox seem to sit a little more on top of the mix rather than in it. Almost like the singing is being done to a track rather than with a band.
Definitely bring up that solo too...sounds like a good one. |

woah, thanks a lot for the feedback!
I'm gonna try and google what geckomusic said and work on that, aswell as havign a look at the vox and the bottom end - so THANKS!
recording process geekfest in a nutshell:
Guitars were a combination of a dual rectifier, H&K tri-amp MkII played through a VHT slanted 4x12 (V30's) recorded with a single SM57. There are 4 rythm tracks in all - combination of an Epiphone Zakk Wylde Les paul and a Jackson DKMG both loaded with EMG's.
Drums we did in a studio we hired for an all nighter, usual drum mic setup, can be specific if needs be - All Acoustic no triggers
Bass - Bass collection 4 strings through harkte Amp and Cabs, 1 mic, 1 DI
Vox - Audio Technica 4033 through an Alesis 3630 i blagged of a mate into my Delta 44.
The band is now in my Sig if anyone wanst to check us out Tour announced soon! |

if i remember rightly it was just to the right of the cone center (around the join) and about an inch away - but spend time recording different mic placements and do diagrams and stuff to help you remember. We also built a tent out of bits of carpet and duvets we had lying around to enclose the sound. there are pics somewhere if you want them |

Use a bracket, [a href=], not html.
Look next to your signature box on the profile page...it states:

BBCode is what you have to do |
