I missed the great part. I read the article but, as they say, it did not do anything for me. Maybe it was the "latest news" ticker that kept moving the text up and down, not your fault I understand. Hard read, and I have four eyes |

From the article:
“It’s all reduced, it’s a surface sham, it’s not the real thing. It’s like digital cameras, when you take a picture of a field full of cows you take the same picture with a Kodachrome camera with a film in it and you look at the film picture take a magnifying glass and go way in and you look at the cows and it still looks like a cow and you go to the digital picture and you go in with a magnifying glass and all you see is like three or four little black squares where the cow was. That’s what’s happening to your ears and your heart and your brain when you listen to digital music.”
Bring it on down. |

I thought this line "That’s what’s happening to your ears and your heart and your brain when you listen to digital music." was over the top.
Listening, in that capacity, would be more like being brain-washed.
And I can turn the radio off anytime I choose. I just choose not to. |

It all depends on the resolution.
Film cows can also look like dots. |

All this, and some day you'll be dead too.
Whine whine whine. Music is about emotion, and feeling, and transferring that to another human being through their ears. It's not about whether you can hear the vocalist's teeth click, or smoker's wheeze in between delivered lines.
It's not about the gear, the medium, or the method of delivery, (be it record or MP3, or film vs. digital). As long as the room, and gear isn't so bad that it gets in the way for most listeners, nobody cares. The consuming public sure doesn't.
Get used to it. It's only going to get worse. Big studios might just end up being the 'buggy manufacturers' of the new millenium.
Some day there will be an "automix" feature on your software. You'll label your tracks, kick, bass, snare, vocal, lead guitar, etc. The software will ask you a few questions about whether you like metal, or pop, or country, and POOF! It'll analise, EQ, compress, and spit out a final mix that's 95% good enough, and better than most people are able to get now on their own.
Acoustics are going to get pushed further down the importance chain. It's just how it is.
No sense crying over it, or pining for the 'good old days.'

Nothing like a dozen paragraphs of rant followed by three paragraphs of advice (one of which starts off by saying there is not enough room in the article for the subject). |
