why do I have "fuzzy cymbals" ?

hello,
My studio has consisted of 3 adats for the last few years and i recently purchased a Pentium 4 at 1.7 to interface with my rig. I have dumped the adat tapes into the computer hoping to take advantage of the automation possibilities(I am generating time code from the BRC to the Cpu and running the lightpipe through an Echo-Gina 24 interface). When the sounds are played back through the program(Sonar) the overheads and Hi-Hat sound warbly or fuzzy in the mix. Could anyone please inform me of possible errors In this set up responsible for the fuzziness in the overheads? (by the way, the lines are clean on the original adat tapes)...Thank you!

Hi cool beans!

What was your clock source when dumping the tapes into the pc? If you set it internal, this may be the reason for the strange sound. The clock source must be set to the input of your interface.

thanks for the quick reply...I am still trying to figure out many aspects of the program/settings/etc. so please excuse any obvious mistakes...I thought the Midi Time Code generated by the BRC would create a perfect sync...and when the files were all in the computer I thought I could switch to another time code (internal) and still keep the sync...am I getting jitter when I switch to the internal clock for the play back without the adat rig? :confused: How do i fix the problem?

What I meant is clock sync. Clock sync is not timecode! MIDI-time code has nothing to do with the clock signal. The system must run to ONE clock source, which means the 44.1 or 48 kHz frequency pulse. The master can be a master clock or the first player in your chain. All the following components, like your pc or DAT must be synchronized to the source (the ADAT here). Again: this doesn´t mean time code! So look into your setup and switch the CLOCK SOURCE to your ADAT input. I hope you´ll find it, I don´t know the program you use.

use a lint brush on your cymbals before recording. i find it helps take care of the fuzzyness. good luck!
