Hi Folks, one of my clients needed to change some info in a series of programs. He told me he can do all the changes himself, if the programs can be submitted for broadcast in DVD format. Here are my concerns.
(1) They will be re-encoded into the server, if I cannot just transfer the files in as Mpeg2 off the DVD.
(2) Not sure what he is using to create the DVD's. If it has the new copy prevention, my encoder may not like this, as well as proceeding on to a digital broadcast, more compression and encoding.
(3) If we go the other route, all programs will have to be bounced from Beta SP into digital, to alter the info, then replaced back to Beta SP. A very expensive alternative. Weeks of work, possibly.
My thoughts would be to have him do the DVD. I will transfer the cuts to Beta SP, essentially returning it to analog, then load the server from the analog SP without possible digital mayhem.
Any ideas? Would you think 3 MPEG encoding processes would be kind of risky, re: compression, anti-copy, re-encoding at broadcast?
I suppose you could liken it to mp3, just re-encoded several times, at different compression rates.
It is a tough one.
Thanks for any support,

Dave why not ask him WHY he has to supply it on DVD. I'm rather new to DVD authoring, having only done it in iDVD, with my DVD Studio Pro unused yet. My understanding of the process, though is that he needs to have the files first in a format on hard drives that he would need to encode it himself.
Why then could he not copy them to a firwire drive or as data on DVD-R to give you. It's the Authoring that makes it a problem.
Or am I all wet? |

RM, Good point on the authoring, but don't know if my stand alone burner will accept his un-finalized version. There's got to be more to this, I'll find out more. I think he thought editing in a generic change could be easily set up in DVD's.
60 shows, (30) 60 min BetaSP dubs, editing, and all that in real time. Got to narrow down exactly what he wants changed.
If it a regional credit roll, I can make a seperate residing program on the server. It just cut's to it based on the program length to credits. But he still may have to dub the shows. Far less cost than editing. he can send me 10 shows at a time...
Thanks RM,

He should be able to make a data DVD instead of authoring a DVD.
What software/hardware is he using? |

Hey G! I don't know what he has, all the shows were produced onto Beta SP in a pro studio. I think he compiled them to DVD's. He told me he is going to provide me with 4 shows per DVD keeping the DVD quality level at it's highest. I'll see how it works out.
Thanks,
