Hello, Ive really enjoyed this site, very informative at times, some great minds milling around.Admittedly, I have no idea the effort it would take ito make a website this nice, but a few ideas have popped into my head that I'd like to share. These are just things floating around I felt inclined to type, that I figure what the hell, might as well push send, wouldnt hurt anybody to read. I dont know the ins and outs of maintaining a web site like this, so dont take this as anything more than a brainstorm.
Going around the net, I noticed most sites that get lots of hits offer some sort of unique content beyond the usual forum banter. Sonicstate and harmony central have equipment reviews, other sites have audio professionals give essays on their philosophies towards music, recording, and life. This site has something akin to that on the bbs, but as a research tool thats not unique, or efficient.
Hypothetically, if Im curious about a synth module, or a cheap soundcard I can go to sonicstate, and wham bam thank you ma'am theres a highly organised, efficient database of user reviews. For the nitty gritty I find thats a great way to find info, its there sans the knuckleheaded banter. Then if I still have a curiosity about an item or idea I might go into a forum to raise a point, ask a question.
In the forum I might find discussions that have a focus, discussions on news articles and essays from the site. And with those articles instead of repeating the same damn motions, you can just refer them to that page where theres a name and a picture, that gives an aura of authority with an article. Then when theres threads of actual signifigance some are more educated before they enter a discussion. For instance, on just about every audio forum when a mastering questionn arises the link to digido.com is given back in response...why couldnt the link to Ro be given for pro audio gear in the same manner, the experitise is here, but as it is presented not efficient.

If I was wondering about high end professional reverbs, pre amps, mics, analog recording etc etc theres no such resource as is at sonic state. Sure theres great forums like this, but thats not the same efficient research tool as a knowledgebase of user reviews. I mean, if somebody said what synth should I get, I can either tediously write out the history of the industry,or... I can give a link to sonicstate and say, have fun figuring it out yourself. RO could be the place where anywhere on the net somebody is wondering about high quality pro audio equipment could go for the same, an efficient base of knowledge and expertise. Think of the exposure youd get from everybody referring the curious to this site.
if I was going to get a quarter of my body cut off, fuck a second opinion, Id like a 6th and seventh opinion, and likewise when I remove a signifigant chunk of my bank account in the name of music I like to do research. Put yourself in the curious net surfers shoes...
What da -f am I saying? this site is great, but maybe some sort of unique content presented in a different format would capture a loyal niche if its focused on the types of products people who frequent this forum use. Its like, come for the food, stay for the pie..U dig? I mean Ive seen some great posts, if they were just worked up, and presented as a few articles(with authors permission of course) that would be like a spiders web, also some sort of user review section. And if that generated enough interest it could grow to whatever youd want...
I see a gap in whats on the net, and here I see talent that fills that gap...but is a bulletin board alone enough to really shake the audio world up? This is just an observation, a brainstorm..nothing more or less.
-mr. rob |
