I love their drum sound as well. I'm not sure how they achieved it, but I got close once when I mic'ed my kit like I normally do along with farly distant U87's as room mics. I squashed the dogwater out of them with 2 Shure Level Locks. (BTW, if you ever find one of these BUY THEM!, I've been looking & haven't seen one in a long time). It gives you an edge & power that Dave gets. I had to nudge these tracks forward in protools so I didn't get weird phase issues, but it sounded very similar to the Flaming Lips. Hope it helps, good luck.

Jal,
Cool man! Glad you found the studio! That's a super nice location...I used to go to school down there and loved it! I've never had a bad time in PA either!

that sucked.
did u go to school with dave at fredonia?
later,

It's a mic-level podium compressor, and drums drive the thing so hard it distorts and compresses like crazy. You can get a backwards drum kit sound if you turn it all the way up. I usually mix this in with the kit so I don't get too out of control. Producer David Khane (Fishbone, Blake Babies, and more recently Sugaray, No Doubt) turned me on to these. They are incredible if your looking for a power indie rock sound.

Wow, I know this is kinda a stale thread but...

The Shure Level Loc isn't a very rugged little box. It's about 3/4ths a rack space. The power supplies to these, well, I have yet to see one. This kind of sucks since I'd like to rack mount it, but that's useless seeing as I'll just end up feeding it 9 volt batteries day after day.

Lately a $35 ECM-8000 mic between the kick and snare directly into this little bad boy will do the trick. I have a pic, but can't post it here. Check the gearslutz:

They can be found for under $300 sometimes on Ebay. It's kind of a one trick pony, but damn, what a one trick it does.
