Thread: Digital Recorder for short films !

I think the reason you have not received any replies is that $30 - 60 will not get you anything worth using for a "film". I know some Event videographers use the iRiver mp3 recorders for weddings and such, but I don't have personal experience with them. Even they cost more than your budget, though. Personally I wouldn't want to mess around with three separate recorders anyway. What you need is an audio person to handle your sound that can either mix "on the fly", or that can record to separate tracks for mixing in post. The lowest cost decent digital recorders are ones like the Tascam DR-03 or Zoom H2 at about $100 each. And of course they only record stereo, so you would have to mix down to two tracks. So I would say you need to take a realistic look at your budget.

Mike - am I right in interpreting your post as the need for three separate mono recorders that would be used with lav mics but would be carried out of shot by the characters in the films? Is the idea that you would then collect the resulting memory cards and plug them into a PC card reader to transfer the audio and try to sync it with the video? Drumrob is correct in saying you won't get much of a recorder for $60. Even the cheapest MicroSD recorders are $100 or so.

Beware of anything that is classed as a "memo recorder", as these compress speech to such a low bitrate that it's just about OK for office dictation and the like, but not suitable for film soundtrack as all the audio quality is squeezed out.
