Building a desk

Hey there, am currently building a desk to house all my gear and any future stuff I get, I won't bore you with all the details as it's been taxing me quite a bit

The issue I'm trying to address now is the rack mounting of gear. I am a student on a budget and would rather not fork out for rack strips, but will if I have to.

Is it possible to rack mount gear into wood? There are going to be several 2 by 4 inch uprights which if I space 18 inches apart I will be able to slot gear in and attach to the uprights. Will I need any special inserts (we call them Rawlplugs in England) to help the screws remain stable as you would putting in some shelves on the wall?

I'm tempted to do this aswell because I'm not an expert when it comes to balancing power and I hear that mounting gear in metal racks can contribute to ground loop issues which I'd rather not have to face after spending cash and building the workstation!

Gear rails cost $20 bucks in canada. They can't be that pricy there? But yes wood would work as well.

Buy the rails, save the head aches when you inevitably expand your tools.

But if you just cannot get the rails then pre-drill the screw holes in the wooden rails you have.

You will get longer life from the setup you are suggesting using wooden rails if the gear face lays more down upon the rail rather then the rail screws trying to support the weight of whatever gear you want it to support in a horizontal fashion
