How to mic indian percussions

hello ppl

I need help on recording two indian instruments...the Tabla and the Thavil ( www.indian-instruments.com/percussion/thavil.htm ).I am not sure on how to mic up this two instruments pls help. Thanks

Mike them as you would a conga or frame drum. SM-57 on top would be the easiest. Large Diaphram Cardioid condensor would also work well. They are really beautiful sounding and you will want to capture the very woody sound they make. It this going to be live or recording setup?
