    Default Shure PG48 problems

    Hi
I've just bought a new Shure PG48 microphone to use with my Yamaha MT8X 8 track cassette recorder. After setting everything up correctly and trying to record, I find that there is ALOT of noise and very little of the sound that I wanted to record has been captured. I know that the machine isn't faulty as I've been recording with a different mic recently. Does anyone know of any reason why the PG48 wouldn't work on my cassette recorder? Any help at all would be awesome! :D
    Cheers
    Louis

The MT8X has unbalanced jack inputs on channels 1 - 4 that will take a dynamic microphone, but only if wired correctly. What sort of cable are you using to connect your PG48 to the MT8X?

My guess is that you have either an XLR to TRS cable and that the ring connection on the jack plug is not making contact with anything, or that you have an XLR to TS cable with pin 3 of the XLR not connected.

If your jack plug is a TRS type (has tip, ring and sleeve contacts), see if you can find a TRS-TS jack adaptor that connects the ring to sleeve and not to the tip or nothing (open circuit). Unfortunately, most TRS-TS adaptors (such as the Hosa GPP290) connect the tip and ring together, so would not work for you.

If the jack plug is already a TS type, it's unlikely you will find an XLRF-XLRM adaptor that gounds pin 3, so you may have to look for an XLR(F) to TS cable that connects the XLR pin 3 to pin 1.

Otherwise, you may be in for making up an XLR - TS cable or using a plug-in transformer adaptor.
