Default I need to get railed! mic pres: what do you think?

I am debating the search and purchase of some vintage rails, while unsure of the price and potential issues of maintainance and noise, both in the signal path and external rf also.
I have also considered rack units like the amek channel in a box.
If I want to pair this pre with say a c-414 and mike vox, acoustic guitar etc, What will give me a nice vintagey kind of warmth?

The problem I have now is equivalent to solid state guitars vs an old fender black face?
    Any suggestions?
