Every fall I have to mic a steel drum duo at our local harvest festival.
That's a total of four pans, two per member. I use a pair of AKG C1000's
per performer on a stereo mic bar about eighteen to twenty inches above the bottom of the pan. I don't like those mics on much else, but they seem to do very well on steel drum. One year I tried to mic from underneath so I could get closer to the pan, but I didn't care for it.

After 7 years of recording a lot of pans - I finally got it right - ribbons!!
By far the best mic for all pans - bass, tenors, double tenors, leads - ribbons!!!.
I have tried close micing - top - bottom - both. I tried distant micing - everything. When I got my first ribbon mics last year I though they should sound good - did they ever!! No comparison to dynamics, condensers, or tubes. The ribbon mics just smoothed out the highs and picked up all of the secondary nuances of a very difficult to record (well) instrument. Depending on the ribbon mic - place a single mic at least 2 to 3 feet above the pan - play with angle of the mic on the pan surface - don't be afraid to get some or a lot of the room - find the sweet spot for the room, the pan, the player and the mic.
