I'm shopping for an EQ with vibe. Can I get something that is close to everything? Tight bottom end, rich mids and silky highs or should I be investing in EQ's that are designed for a specific range? What is the best for mids?

My budget is between 3K and 5K and if I get used, it gives me a good chunk to buy something pretty sweet. I would like this to be useful for other sonic tasks like vocals and acoustic instruments but primarily for my 2 buss. I need something surgical as well but I've been resorting to my ITB eqs up till now. I have no idea where to start. Been ITB too long and want something that will enhance my analog rig.

I've been looking at Millennia, Great River and DW Fearn. What do you suggest?

    Cheers!

    Is that all?!?

I'll doubt you'll find something that fits all your requirements in one box and/or in your price range. There are many great EQ's out there that have some great sound but not everything, so you'll have to narrow down your search a little bit to the things that matter most.

You might look for a two-box solution, like a DM BAX with a Thermonic Pullet (with a matching mic pre).

Any of those. I'm still a big fan of the Ibis and Lordy knows I can't get enough of the BAX at this point... Sontec, Millennia with the Forssell board is high on the list. Tried the GR mastering version -- It was a little limited by (I can't even remember - A 3-way Q control?), but it was a very nice sounding unit...

I know I know, but ya got to start somewhere. I'm trolling for current opinions on everything I suppose. Richard had a few options for sale a while ago, I was thinking about the BAX and the GR he had for sale.

Its crazy sad what we can get used now. Prices are 1/3 to half off on used.

Hey John, I can get a used Millennia with a damaged faceplate for 2400 here and was thinking of adding the Forssell board. Does that mod remove the tube section?

The Forssell board is the bomb. Great bottom end. Way up in my list.

Thats what I want to hear. Does it remove the tube section or is it still part of the EQ?

I believe it removed the tube section, but just going on memory. I do know it sounded great though. You still have to deal with the crapy knob situation though, pretty much sucks in that category.

It gets nothing but praise with that mod and I've heard the bass is to die for.
I know what you mean, they are quite large on the M-2b , not familiar with them on the EQ though

It's more like tiny knobs for freq and pretty much no way to match left and right. I would peg it as a M/S box with killer low end.

I'm using my Passeq for M/S. You think the NSEQ-2 is ideal for M/S?

The GR MAQ-2NV is a great sounding EQ. Superb tight and focused bottom. Midrange is VERY nice to me (ala Neve 1083). Not very versatile due to the 3 wide "Q" choices but a very great EQ, dead silent and reliable! All switches (elma's), & stereo linkable.

I have tried for a month the IBIS and I also liked it (sound). I like a lot of EQ's actually but can't get them all and they all have their strengths and weaknesses (subjectively).

I've been checking out EQs, a bit lower budget. But the API 5500 seems to sound nice. I'm trading it in later this week back to the store for a summit eqp-200b (I know it's not recall knobs, but I want to hear it). Guess you're not looking for tubes though hey..

I'm planning on the NSEQ-2. Might get one next month if all goes well. It has tubes but I'm not sure I'll need the tube sound. The API 5500 is on my list as well.
